The Company & the Role:
A leading renewable energy services provider is seeking a skilled Substation/BESS Technician to support substation operations, preventative maintenance, and grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This full-time role is based near San Jose, CA, and involves hands-on electrical troubleshooting, high-voltage equipment maintenance, and on-site commissioning support.
This is a field-focused position requiring a strong work ethic, technical proficiency, and strict adherence to safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
* Perform preventative maintenance and detailed inspections on substations and medium-voltage electrical systems.
* Conduct site condition assessments (roads, signage, vegetation), document findings, and initiate corrective action.
* Support commissioning, construction, and pre-operational activities for BESS and substation systems.
* Coordinate and execute high-voltage outages in support of maintenance and construction tasks.
* Troubleshoot complex electrical issues including power breakers, control systems, and terminations.
* Prepare monthly operational reports, maintain inspection records, and manage both planned and unplanned outages.
* Strictly follow clearance procedures and safety protocols, including the use of high-voltage PPE.
* Collaborate with inspectors, utilities, and third-party contractors in a professional manner.
* Participate in manufacturer-led technical training sessions and maintain current certifications.
* Contribute to pre-commissioning activities and technical issue resolution on new or upgraded substations.
Role Requirements:
* Minimum 2 years of experience with high-voltage substations and associated components (gas circuit breakers, air switches, etc.)
* Electrical Engineering Technology diploma, state electrical license, or equivalent field experience
* Ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics and technical documentation
* Proficient with diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, insulation testers, and power meters
* Valid driver's license and reliable transportation, with ability to work in all weather conditions
* Capable of working at heights, in confined spaces, and in physically demanding environments
* Availability to work weekends or remain on-call as project needs dictate
Required Qualifications:
* Proven experience with both high- and low-voltage systems and troubleshooting
* Certified in OSHA 10 (General Industry or Construction) and CPR
* Substation maintenance and NFPA 70E training
* Competency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word)
Preferred Qualifications:
* State electrical license (e.g., Texas or equivalent)
* Experience working with grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
* Background in outage coordination and documentation
* Prior experience supporting renewable energy construction and commissioning activities
