Under general to limited direction, leads, and performs a variety of landscape maintenance, care, repair, and related work for sports athletic fields. Employee performs in a lead capacity and requires knowledge of landscape maintenance and repair skills, policies, and procedures within the assigned functional area. Employee is responsible for ensuring all work under charge is performed according to established safety standards, codes, and regulations applicable to the work. Work is performed with independence and limited supervision.
- Leads and supervises subordinate personnel in routine grounds maintenance to semi-skilled trades work; supervises and inspects work; trains workers; confers with immediate supervisor on formal discipline or commendation, or termination of crew personnel.
- May operate a wide variety of construction equipment and tools; operates a variety of specialized trade specific tools and equipment.
- Leads safety meetings and participates in safety inspections.
- Performs various record maintenance duties where applicable, e.g., work orders, materials and supplies ordered/utilized, cost estimates, job/time records, labor logs, maintenance logs, and inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Schedules and performs sports field maintenance, including seeding, fertilization, pesticide/herbicide/fungicide application, soil conditioning, irrigation repair, and irrigation controller programming.
- Oversees event setup from painting fields, erecting tents, erecting fencing, bleacher placement, and any other need of the client setup process.
- Schedules working hours for all full-time and part-time employees under his supervision while ensuring a rotation of nights and days for normal maintenance schedule or event needs.
- Approves employee vacation requests.
- Inspects fields daily and weekly for water moisture and nutritional needs for the athletic fields.
- Perform periodic tests or performance evaluations with field dimensions for various events as well as various proper use of equipment by employees.
- Performs annual reviews and discipline forms for employees.
- Assist with the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and pest and weed control of fields and grounds. Cleans, mows, edges, trims, and generally maintains grounds, recreation areas, and/or athletic fields. Plants, prunes, and trims bushes, shrubs, and trees.
- Operates light vehicles and equipment in the installation, maintenance, and repair functions associated with the assigned functional area; depending on area of assignment, operates equipment that includes, but is not necessarily limited to, flatbed, compactors, backhoes, loaders, chippers, pan, dozers, draglines, forklifts, graders, rollers, loaders, trenchers.
- Maintains a variety of landscape related equipment in order to ensure that the equipment operates safely and appropriately when needed, extend the useful life of the equipment, minimize downtime, and minimize major repair/replacement costs.
- Leads and performs custodial tasks when requested e.g. emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, bathrooms, concession stands, changing light bulbs etc.
- Utilizes knowledge gained through the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) for staff development.
- Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (nights, weekends, and holidays).
- Ability to effectively lead a staff comprised of entry and journey level professionals engaged in carrying out departmental functions.
- Knowledge of established safety procedures for operating a variety of landscape maintenance related equipment.
- Knowledge of and successful experience in the maintenance of sports-related facilities and or Parks to professional standards, with specific experience and skills in the maintenance of baseball fields, stadium, and clubhouse facilities.
- Knowledge and experience in the use, care, and repair of field and maintenance equipment. Experience in the physical preparation of buildings and facilities for scheduled activities and events, and the provision of janitorial and custodial services.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule. Required to operate automotive and public works equipment in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe operation.
- May be assigned to other facilities for County-sponsored special events or other governmental institutions for assistance.
- Ability to perform physically demanding manual labor.
- Ability to understand, interpret, lead, and effectively carry out complex oral and written instructions.
- Considerable knowledge of the semi?professional construction and maintenance work involved in a comprehensive municipal construction, repair, and maintenance program.
- Considerable knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, and necessary safety precautions used in the assigned area of work.
- Ability to operate various handheld tools and repair equipment, e.g., power drill, wrench, screwdriver, shovel, rake, pole saw, edger, blower, and generator.
- Ability to operate various equipment and machinery, e.g., manual and riding lawn mowers, sports turf mowers, and tractors, sod cutters, trucks, weed-eaters, trimmers, edger, blower.
- Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
- Ability to plan, assign and lead the work of skilled and unskilled personnel.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, superiors, and the general public.
