What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Department Technician - .6 FTE position at Osceola Medical Center?
Responsible for assisting the RN to carry out the nursing process in the Emergency, Med Surg and OB departments. Deliver the highest quality nursing care. As a patient advocate, he/she coordinates the care of the patient through collaboration with the nursing team. The ED/Hospital Tech provides daily patient cares, activities, and other tasks as delegated by the nursing staff. He/she monitors and interacts frequently with all patient service departments, utilizes interdisciplinary input to plan, implement and evaluate care. All other duties as assigned within the scope of the ED/Hospital Tech practice.
Typical Schedule:
0.6 FTE; 12 hour shifts - 10am-10pm every third weekend/holiday rotation (hours are subject to change to meet patient demands)
Qualifications:
- Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant program or EMT Basic Program
- Prefer 6 months’ experience in a hospital setting.
- Basic keyboarding and computer knowledge
- Ability learn OMC computer applications.
Responsibilities include:
- Patient observation and care performed as delegated following the Standards of care.
- Perform clerical duties, admit, discharge, transfer paperwork and phone calls.
- Participate in mock codes and other educational activities.
- Member of Decontamination Team
- Transport patients for air transfer.
- Performs and documents vital signs in a timely manner.
- Patient ADLs, such as assisting patients to the bathroom, ambulating patients.
- Perform basic procedures such as catheterization, drawing blood, electrocardiograms, peripheral IVs, Foley catheters.
- Participates in the interdisciplinary plan of care of the patient.
- Participates in the interdisciplinary plan of care of the patient.
- Assist RN with procedures at bedside.
- Performs daily shift duties.
- Completes all assigned shift duties thoroughly in an efficient manner.
- Ensure all paperwork and charges are complete.
- Clean rooms/change linens as required, and stock carts and stock rooms.
- Communicates effectively with all members of the patient care team.
- Personal accountability to stay up to date on all communication (email, training, bulletin board in break room, etc.…)
- Promptly reports abnormal vital signs, blood sugars, observations, and or other patient concerns to physician delegating RN.
- Continually strives to meet and exceed customer service standards in all interactions with customers, which includes patients, visitors, hospital employees, and medical staff.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of infection control practices and their relation to patient care outcomes
- Knowledge of normal range vital signs for pediatric and adult patients
- Understands and adheres to the Patient Bill of Rights and Vulnerable Adults Act.
- Understands the Trauma Code Process
- Understands EMTALA and the requirements.
- Knowledge of the process to transfer a patient outside of OMC.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and medical intervention techniques per scope of practice
- Effectively participates in the interdisciplinary care team.
- Demonstrates and maintains required competencies.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with patients, family members and co-workers.
