Electrical Systems Engineer

Seattle-based Oscilla Power, Inc. (OPI) has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineer to join a small but growing team working on commercializing marine renewable energy. OPI is developing technology to harness energy from ocean waves and is executing several projects aimed at demonstrating and validating its ocean wave energy technology.

We are looking for a team member who is passionate not only about engineering and renewable energy but also someone interested in solving the complex electrical engineering challenges related to marine energy. This position will involve the continued development and improvement of the electrical systems for OPI’s wave energy systems and will ultimately involve taking ownership of specific multidisciplinary projects. This position will involve both the development of innovative concepts and the translation of those ideas into detailed schematics and test-bench prototypes. The successful candidate will be expected to effectively work with engineers from other disciplines to help solve interesting problems, develop specifications, and manage work and deliverables.

Oscilla Power’s systems convert physical motion to grid-compatible power, and thus, the successful applicant will have demonstrated experience with similar electrical applications. They will be expected to work within a small team and manage project activities towards specific design objectives. A positive attitude to proactively identify challenges and develop elegant, innovative solutions that can make a substantive impact on cost and performance is a must.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement low-voltage (<1000V) power systems and support the development of solutions for grid integration for marine renewable energy applications.
  • Lead the development of complex industrial motion control systems, overseeing various subsystem contractors while focusing on optimizing the performance of the overall system.
  • Develop and maintain electrical documentation, including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, electrical schematics, logic diagrams, and panel layouts.
  • Develop specifications and functional descriptions for components and subsystems.
  • Oversee the programming and configuration of PLCs, Motor Drives (VFDs), Generators, and motion control systems by internal staff and external contractors, ensuring adherence to standards, project specifications, and timelines.
  •  Contribute to the design and specification of electrical panels, overseeing their construction by contractors.
  • Utilize MATLAB Simulink and Simscape for power systems and grid integration modeling.
  • Act as the internal subject matter expert for the electrical systems relating to Oscilla Power’s technology implementation, including, but not exclusively limited to, PLCs, HMI, Inverters, VFD drives, generators, motors, lighting, power distribution, system integration, sensors, and electro-mechanical devices.
  •  Interface with contractors and technicians to successfully install various projects and lead troubleshooting efforts.

Required skills & experience:

  • Applicant must be a US citizen or US Permanent Resident.
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or related field.
  • 5 years of experience in a relevant position, such as industrial automation, motion control systems, or utilities, with a strong focus on power systems and grid integration. Experience requirements can be relaxed for higher degrees.
  • Extensive experience creating and interpreting Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EI&C) documentation
  • Demonstrated expertise with PLCs, VFDs, and motion control systems, Siemens preferred (SINAMICS, STARTER, PROFINET), although experience with other major vendors (Rockwell Automation, Omron, Beckhoff, Mitsubishi Electric) is also acceptable.
  • Proficiency in creating and interpreting electrical one-line and three-line diagrams.
  • Strong understanding of MATLAB Simulink and Simscape for power systems and grid integration modeling.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA systems and experience managing external development teams.
  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant codes and standards (UL, NEC, etc.) pertaining to wire sizing, fuse sizing, and panel design.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred skills:

  • Proven ability to manage and direct technical teams and contractors.
  • A Professional Engineering (PE) certification (or the ability to obtain one).
  • Experience working on systems for the marine environment would be advantageous.

The applicant is expected to work 40 hrs/week and will be located, or be willing to relocate, to OPI’s office in Seattle, WA. OPI has a competitive benefits package and a dynamic working environment. Salary and stock options will be commensurate with experience. Relocation assistance will be provided for out of state applicants.
