Role
The primary responsibility of the Driver is to provide safe, reliable, courteous and efficient transportation services for the residents of the Community.
Areas of Responsibility
- Must know and follow all guidelines in the Vehicles policy (Risk Management).
- Drive residents to outings, health care appointments, banking and other activities as determined by the Lifestyle Director/Concierge and the Executive Director.
- Assist residents with boarding and exiting the vehicle. Assist in loading packages, boxes, sacks, etc.
- Maintain checklist of passengers for each trip.
- Assist care staff/lifestyle staff in accounting for resident whereabouts at all times when Ensemble Care residents are included in the passengers in accordance with the Ensemble Care Outings policy.
- Properly secure the wheel chairs following the vehicle’s operating manual for this activity. Insure that the clamps and safety belts are secured as required and both hand brakes of the wheel chair are engaged before starting the vehicle.
- Operate the wheel chair lift according to the operating instructions provided by the manufacturer.
- Assist wheel chair bound residents not remaining in their wheelchair to bus seats and make sure they are secured by the seat belt. Fold the wheel chairs and firmly secure.
- Prepare the vehicle for operation by performing a pre-trip safety inspection at the beginning of every trip from the Community including tires and lights.
- Carefully monitor the ongoing operation of the vehicle especially when operating the vehicle
- Properly service the vehicle with the oversight of the Maintenance/Environmental Services Director.
- Clean the interior of the vehicle after each trip. Deep clean the interior and exterior of the vehicle on a scheduled basis.
- Treat all passengers with sensitivity and courtesy.
- Maintain the Vehicle Operating and Maintenance Log by noting when the vehicle was serviced, the mileage per trip noting beginning and ending mileage for each trip.
- Make sure the vehicle does not leave the Community with less than a quarter tank of fuel.
- Make sure the vehicle is locked and secured when unoccupied.
- Stay in communication with the Community by using the cellular telephone assigned to the department in a safe manner.
- Assist the Lifestyle Director as needed.
- Abide by all requirements set forth by the vehicle insurance carrier and local and state laws.
- Ensure all passengers are wearing seat belts before leaving the area.
- Attend and participate in all meetings and training as required by Company policy and the supervisor.
- Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, which include wearing the proper uniform and nametag when on duty.
- Be constantly watchful of resident change in status. Report all signs to the Lifestyle Director/Concierge following the Company policies and procedures.
- Report any and all deferred maintenance, vandalism or hazardous situations to the Lifestyle Director/Concierge as discovered and take appropriate action as necessary.
- Ensure understanding of and compliance with all regulations regarding residents’ rights.
- Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent resident, associate, Community or Company information deemed as such.
- Other duties as assigned.
Special Requirements/Certifications:
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
- Must possess good judgment, time management, decision making, and safety awareness skills.
- Must have a positive Criminal Background Screening.
- Must pass a physical having no signs or symptoms of a communicable disease including tuberculosis where required. Freedom from tuberculosis must be documented on an annual basis where required.
- The Community is a drug free workplace; associates are subject to adherence to the Company Drug Free Workplace policy.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license (Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) if required) for the state where the vehicle is operated.
- Must have an acceptable Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) record; the record must be checked annually.
- Must be considered to be insurable by the Community’s automobile insurance carrier.
- Must not have the following:
- Driver’s license denied or revoked within the last three (3) years.
- Two (2) or more suspensions (with reinstatement), within three (3) years or currently suspended license without reinstatement. Suspensions for certain offenses will not be considered for the purposes of this requirement, i.e.: unpaid tickets, failure to appear, underage use of tobacco, and failure to pay child support.
- Any major DMV citation in the last five (5) years. Major citations include, but are not limited to: DUI, DWI, speeding in excess of 25 mph, reckless driving, careless driving, vehicular homicide, manslaughter, or any citation punishable by incarceration.
- Two (2) or more at fault accidents within the last three (3) years.
- Three (3) or more moving violations within the last five (5) years.
- Must be able to pass a driving safety test while driving the Community vehicle.
- Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age but not more than seventy (70) years of age. If over 70 years of age, the driver must provide documentation from their primary care physician that they are capable of operating the assigned vehicle. This documentation must be renewed every year.
