    Job summary:
    Assist the special education teacher in the operation and function of the classroom, and to work with individual or small groups of students as directed by and under the supervision of the special education teacher. The selected candidate may assist special education students in the general education classroom as well as the resource room setting.

    This six-hour position may require, most likley will require, the selected candidate to assist students receiving special education services outside during recess, in the lunchroom, and also with needs in the restroom.

    This position may include lifting of a student to a changing table or from a wheel chair to the floor. Two individuals will always work together to safely lift the student to meet his/her needs.

    Park Brook is a school Focused on Fitness for the purpose of increasing academic achievement. While not a part of this position, there may be opportunities to work with programs before or after school that are related to fitness. In addition to the fitness programs, Park Brook does offer a variety of opportunities before school, after school and on weekends (paid) that the selected candidate would be able to work. This is not a requirement of the position, but an opportunity to expand the position some days if the candidate chooses to do so.

    Park Brook Elementary has a fitness studio with the intention of providing additional fitness opportunities to assist students with regulating their bodies. The candidate selected for this position may assist students in this room.

    Responsibilities and tasks may include:

    • Assist in the implementation of the students' special education instructional plan(s) including physical and behavioral management. Specific duties are assigned by the supervising teacher based on students' special needs.
    • Assist in the implementation and follow through of the students' individual plans in all settings in which the program is delivered and as assigned by the supervising teacher.
    • Collect observational data about assigned student(s) in various school settings and report to supervising teacher.
    • Assist in the preparation, collection and maintenance of educational materials and equipment.
    • Complete educational forms, reports and other student related data relevant to the individual student(s) in the special education program as directed by the special education teacher.
    • Assist special education students outside at recess. Students generally go outside for recess unless the temperature is colder than -5 degrees.
    • Assist special education students during physical education class, music class, and in the lunchroom.
    • Any other duties deemed necessary by the team and approved by the Special Education Coordinator Special Education Supervisor.

    Minimum qualifications include:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Persons employed shall have the skills needed to perform tasks and work with children, staff and parents. Must have physical capability to lift and attend to physical needs of students as required.
    • Applicants meet the Highly Qualified requirement if they have:
      • Two years of study at an institution of higher education; Minnesota’s standard; A minimum of 60 semester credits or the amount required to complete two years of full-time enrollment as determined by the institution attended OR
      • An Associate’s (or higher) degree; Minnesota’s standard: An AA, AS, AAS, (or higher) degree OR
      • Received a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment.
    • Must be highly qualified (HQ) within 30 days from the date of employment https://education.mn.gov/MDE/dse/Para/
      • District will pay for the exam and up to 10 hours of prep and exam time.
    • Participation in district training program prior to and during employment.
    • During the interview, all candidates will be asked to solve and demonstrate how they would explain math concepts to students. Math concepts may include: fractions, telling time using an analog clock, and money.

    Salary: View Classification II (2) salary grid on page 4, section 1, and page 5 Section 2 on Educational Support Professional contract

    Work schedule: 6 hours/day; 30 hours/week The hours will be 6 hours between 8:50 a.m. - 3:20 p.m.
