Job Summary

The STEM Lab Coordinator works with the SSOC staff and faculty members of OSU-OKC to facilitate and support the development and retention of OSU-Oklahoma City students. The coordinator provides academic support services and workshops and works with students individually and in small groups to develop and implement tools to help those students improve their science, math, and analytical skills.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide high quality, ethical academic support services to students.
  • Develop instructional materials for students and training materials for part-time STEM Lab tutors.
  • Use data and work with faculty across campus to establish “touch points” throughout the semester to determine when students need the most assistance.
  • Procure content and develop resources based on best practices in science and math instruction. Establish a digital repository available to students and faculty that includes this information.
  • Schedule classroom visits each semester to introduce yourself and the SSOC to students and faculty.
  • Ensure accurate data collection by requiring all students to sign into the STEM Lab.
  • Work with the Director and subject experts to develop, maintain, and lead workshops in the SSOC or individual classrooms as requested.
  • Be available for supplemental instruction when requested by faculty.
  • Assist students with general questions, computer help, or in connecting with a tutor or Academic Success Coach.
  • Generate tutor schedule prior to each term, maintain schedule throughout each semester, maintain updated contact list of tutors, and manage tutor absences.
  • Answer phone calls and check phone messages regularly.
  • Establish procedures and protocols for remote (virtual) tutoring.
  • Complete all mandatory training and participate in a minimum of two professional developments each year.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Qualification

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in a science or math intensive discipline (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, etc.)

Work Experience

  • Minimum of two years working in an academic setting with faculty and staff.
  • Minimum of two years teaching and/or tutoring experience.
  • Successful completion of college-level science, math, and other quantitative coursework (transcript(s) required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in science or mathematics, or a bachelor's degree in a related field with relevant experience assisting high school and college students with academic difficulties.
  • Ability to tutor students in college level science and math courses (i.e. biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, etc.)
  • Two years' experience providing instruction and/or tutoring to adult learners in a higher education setting. Supervisory experience of full or part-time employees.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of educational tutoring principles, practices, techniques and theory.
  • Skill in presenting ideas and concepts orally and in writing to a diverse audience and adapting communication style to that audience.
  • Knowledge of current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to relate to a diverse population and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to team environment.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions and take appropriate action, resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other department staff, faculty, students, and the public.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly, and effectively, both verbally and in writing to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries appropriately with all students, faculty, staff and community partners.
  • High degree of initiative to work independently and also collaborate in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of office technologies including but not limited to: office computers, scanners, internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU-OKC and OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated history of ethical and professional behavior.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends.
  • Work will be performed in an office environment with a significant amount of public contact, in person, by telephone, via email, and various communication platforms.

Physical Requirements

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, talking and listening.
  • Duties require extensive use of computers, telephone and other office equipment.
  • Requires possible lifting of up to 25 lbs. (If an object weights more than 45 lbs., OSU-Oklahoma City requires this to be a two-person lift).
