Job Summary :

The Dean is the chief academic officer for the assigned School and is responsible for the assigned School's administration, planning, supervision, personnel, budgeting, operations, curriculum, and resource development. The incumbent is the first-line administrator of the individual School to which he / she is assigned. The Dean has the responsibility for all issues related to the School, including but not limited to short and long-term goal setting, alignment with institutional goals and policies, faculty / staff development and evaluation, curriculum, budget, personnel, schedules, and attendance.

Contact with Others :

The Dean is accountable for all processes and personnel within the School, which demands regular contact with members of their faculty / staff and other faculty / staff members of the university. This leader must be a champion of his / her faculty. Must work effectively and cooperatively with campus faculty, departments, and support units. There is also regular contact with persons outside the university, such as industry partners, potential donors, vocational / technical personnel, two and four-year program personnel, and advisory committees. This requires an incumbent to use tact, diplomacy, and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions :

Administration

  • Establishes and maintains effective leadership and coordination of all School activities.
  • Establishes and maintains effective cooperation and coordination with all other schools, departments, and support units within the university.
  • Supervises recruitment and retention of faculty and staff.
  • Directs and coordinates School accreditation activities, including program accreditation as applicable and School contributions to institutional accreditation.
  • Coordinates implementation of student retention efforts, encouraging the use of intervention strategies, including early alerts and tutoring.
  • Implements the institutionally recommended strategies for retention.
  • Coordinates implementation of the assessment model, guiding Department Heads and faculty in ensuring regular reporting.
  • Accepts other related responsibilities as assigned.

Planning

  • Directs and coordinates short-term, intermediate, and long-range planning for the School.
  • Supervises and coordinates the development of effective and efficient semester class schedules.
  • Prepares and recommends a budget and equipment purchases to the Provost; supervises and coordinates budget expenditures for equipment, supplies, repairs, etc.
  • Plans and supervises the development and distribution of departmental and School promotional materials and publications.
  • Professional Development

  • Coordinates and / or plans professional development activities for School faculty, Department Heads, and office staff.
  • Participates in professional development activities / training and professional organizations.
  • Ensures that new faculty, Department Heads, and office staff are paired with an experienced colleague for training and mentorship.
  • Promotes teamwork and continuous improvement in the School.
  • Teaching

  • Deans will not have a teaching requirement.
  • Deans are allowed to teach up to six hours of overload per semester (fall, spring, summer).
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor appropriate faculty teaching assignments.
  • Evaluation

  • Evaluates Department Heads annually.
  • Evaluates direct-report staff annually.
  • Ensures that faculty are evaluated annually.
  • Curriculum and Program Development

  • Directs and coordinates all credit courses and degree / certificate granting programs of the School.
  • Directs and supervises the planning and development of continuing education courses and / or programs.
  • Directs and supervises the application of policies related to remedial math classes ensuring appropriate placement of students.
  • Coordinates and approves items submitted to the Curriculum Committee from the School.
  • Evaluate and respond to industry needs for new and existing academic programs and qualifications.
  • Resource Development

  • Plans, supervises, and coordinates resource development for the School, including advisory committee activities, grant proposals, and fund-raising activities and / or events.
  • Assessment

  • Ensures that assessment systems and processes are being utilized for programs, departments, and the School to promote continuous improvement.
  • Oversees processes associated with increasing the retention and graduation rate of programs within the School.
  • Collaborate with the Provost for Academic Affairs to examine low-productivity programs and determine proper actions for those programs.
  • Student Advisement

  • Where applicable, recruits and advises students on programs and enrollment.
  • Institutional and Community Service

  • Serves on and actively participates on the Deans Council.
  • Serves on and actively participates on the Provost's Council.
  • Serves on and actively participates on institutional committees.
  • Serves on and actively participates on external boards and committees.
  • Monitors Physical Facilities

  • Reports conditions requiring maintenance department attention.
  • Promotes and maintains a professional office environment.
  • Completes all mandatory training and participates in a minimum of two professional development each year.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

    Position Qualification

    Minimum Qualifications :

    Education :

  • A graduate degree in science, technology, engineering, or a math-related field is required. Individuals with alternate combinations of credentials and / or experience may be considered.
  • Training or Experience Required :

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a STEM-related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant, successful administrative experience.
  • Special Skills, Knowledge, Abilities Required :

  • Communication skills – Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with clear, grammatically correct English and prepare complex reports on deadline; requires interaction with supervisors, colleagues, students, alumni, advisory committee members, and the public, using tact, discretion, and independent judgment.
  • Computer skills – Must be demonstrably proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and e-mail and Internet searches.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities imposed by frequent deadlines, peak workloads, and public / student contact.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse community and meet the needs of diverse student populations.
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated a history of ethical and professional behavior.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master's graduate degree in a STEM field.
  • Higher education experience in teaching and administration.
  • Licensure and / or targeted experience in a related area (e.g., electrical, architectural, or other engineering field).
  • Greater than two years of industry experience.
  • Working Conditions :

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, in an often busy and noisy environment.
  • Work will be performed in an office and classroom environment with a significant amount of public contact, in person, by telephone, via email, and various communication platforms.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, talking, and listening.
  • Duties require extensive use of computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
  • Requires possible lifting of up to 25 lbs. If an object weighs more than 45 lbs., OSU-Oklahoma City requires this to be a two-person lift.
