What are the responsibilities and job description for the Children’s Services Summer Reading Assistant position at Oswego Public Library?
The Summer Reading Assistant will work under the direction of the Children’s Librarian to assist with the planning, preparation, and implementation of the summer reading program at the Oswego Public Library. This is a temporary part-time contract position.
The summer reading program is a 6-week program of events, incentives, and activities to encourage learning in all areas during the school break, with a particular focus on literacy. Each summer program has a thematic focus and a schedule of STEAM activities, crafts, and story times.

Typical Duties:
- Assist with planning and creation of decorations and crafts.
- Assist in planning and preparing STEAM activities.
- Assist in creating promotional materials and event planning.
- Work directly with patrons of all ages to answer questions, register for the program, record reading progress, assist with crafts, etc.
- Assist library clerks at the service desk.
- Other duties as assigned within the scope and spirit of the job position.
The Summer Reading Assistant’s employment dates will be from June to August. Hours are 20-24 hours per week, with a flexible schedule within library hours and dependent upon library events. The position will report to the Children’s Librarian. The successful candidate will enjoy working with children and in a high-energy environment. A background or current study in education or a library field is a plus.
