General Functions:
Direct Care Workers (DCWs) provide assistance to people with personal needs and help them participate in programs that strengthen their life skills and ensure a safe and comfortable environment. Under the direction of the Respite Director, the Director Assistant is responsible for assisting in overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Respite program. Supervise DCWs and teach skills encouraging professional development for all staff. Provide opportunities for all participants to build confidence, learn new life-skills, and develop friendships. The Assistant Respite Director is representative of the philosophy, mission, and goal of the YMCA and its program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
· Attend all assigned programs and events (on time and prepared)
· Participate in all staff meetings (attendance is mandatory)
· Provide supervision to participants and Direct Care Workers while at program, ensuring their safety and well being
· Encourage active participation of staff, volunteers, and participants in all activities
· Develop positive working relationships with parents and coworkers
· Provide timely, complete, legible, and accurate documentation of required information in participant Case Notes and RDRIS forms
· Provide supervision or direct care services for participant swim instruction and aquatic programs when applicable
· Comply with all HIPAA, OPWDD, OIG, OMIG, DOH, FSS, HSBS Waiver regulations
· Comply with the Oswego YMCA/Respite Program guidelines, policies, procedures, and agreements
· Provide transportation services and follow all traffic laws while operating the Respite Program vehicle
· Assist in planning and implementing program activities and special events
· Facilitate inclusive opportunities, for participants, whenever possible
· Model positive behavior for Direct Care Workers and Respite participants
· Promote positive decision making with participants
· Maintain current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification
· Maintain communication with the Respite Director, serving as a liaison between families and managers
· Possess a general understanding and knowledge of medical, psychological, and physical implications of developmental disabilities
· Provide care and structured activities in relation to the respite participants goals, needs and capabilities. This should include recreational, educational, and socially appropriate activities.
Experience and Education:
- High School Diploma (some college education preferred)
- Excellent Communication and Writing Skills
- Prior experience working with people with developmental disabilities is preferred
- Knowledge of Health and Fitness
- Basic Swimming Skills (when applicable)
- Valid Driver’s License – Clean record
- 5 years driving experience
- First Aid and CPR
- Complete background check

Trainings & Certifications:
· Must complete on-line Blood borne Pathogens training prior to initial assignment to position.
· Must attend and complete YMCA Child Abuse Prevention within the first 90-days of employment.
· Must complete and/or attend any other trainings required by the Y and/or Respite Director.

Physical Demands:
Ability to frequently sit, use his/her hands and fingers, stand, walk, reach, balance, stoop, crouch, kneel, and climb. Ability to lift and/or carry and move up to 35 pounds (occasionally this could be more). Specific vision abilities required: close, color, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
Duties are performed inside/outside/throughout the community. At times, respite employees may be exposed to undesirable working conditions, communicable infectious diseases, and the risk of injury from participants. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to above average.
