DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Incumbent provides social work services to patients of the Community Mental Health/Addiction Recovery Services. These duties require the performance of clinical social work in helping patients with social, emotional and related difficulties associated with their behavioral health needs. The work is performed within established standards of care and under clinical supervision. The scope of work to be performed is determined by patient and agency need with the goal of affording access to those that are in need of services and assisting individuals in their recovery. The Staff Social Worker functions under the direction of a Supervising Social Worker, Supervising Psychologist, Deputy Director or Program Manager who may define or limit the work to be performed. Employees in this class are expected to meet with professionals of various agencies in or outside of the community to obtain assistance and guidance for patients. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Participates in the intake and screening of new patients, evaluating and diagnosing the patient and problems;
- Participates as a team member in individual, group and family therapy;
- Provides social work services to help patients adjust to their behavioral health needs and have a successful recovery;
- Refers clients to other governmental and non-governmental agencies;
- Coordinates various activity and treatment programs with other social agencies;
- Compiles case studies, recording pertinent information;
- Plans with the community mental health team and with community agencies to relate the patient's treatment and rehabilitation program to his/her social situation prior to his/her discharge;
- Collects records and maintains appropriate data from various sources such as professional staff and patients' families to establish an overall approach to the solution of patients’' mental and social problems;
- Maintains electronic charts and information on community and health resources, which can be utilized during the patient's care and subsequent to his/her discharge;
- Attend additional administrative meetings and trainings as required;
- Participates in the process of transfer of patients to other levels of treatment as appropriate;
- Other duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the practices and procedures of clinical social work and of the social factors affecting those with behavioral health needs; ability to organize work effectively; ability to interpret federal, state and local laws affecting the medical and health programs; ability to prepare reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Social Work from a graduate school of social work approved by the New York State Department of Education.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Current Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or must obtain Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) within six (6) months of appointment.
