What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Public Health Intern position at Ottawa County?
Under the direction of an Environmental Public Health Team Supervisor, this position carries out seasonal activities as part of grants received from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy (EGLE) and the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS). The primary duties include monitoring water quality at public beaches in Ottawa County by collecting and analyzing water samples for E. coli and other contaminants, contributing to public awareness on water safety. Additionally, the position supports surveillance efforts for tick and mosquito populations to aid in the management of vector-borne diseases.
This is a seasonal, non-benefited position, with work starting mid-May through Labor Day, 2025. Days and hours are flexible, but could include full-time hours for the season.The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Licenses:
Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audiological appliances, and devices to increase mobility. Capability to perform fieldwork under various conditions, including woodlands, both on and off trail, beaches, sand dunes, swamps, and water sample collection in Lake Michigan and other bodies of water.
Working Conditions:
The position involves both office and fieldwork across Ottawa County. Fieldwork may include exposure to extreme temperatures or weather conditions, with potential hazards such as human waste, bloodborne pathogens, vermin, and insects. The position requires travel within the county to conduct inspections and investigations in diverse settings, from residential properties to commercial establishments.

- Traps and classifies mosquitoes and ticks across various sites, reports findings to state partners for enhanced surveillance of vector-borne diseases.
- Supports enforcement of County Sanitary Code, Ottawa County Environmental Health Regulations, and relevant State Laws in environmental health areas.
- Assists the public with environmental health inquiries and complaints, providing advice and solutions for sanitation and environmental issues.
- Conducts inspections at public bathing beaches, and investigate environmental health hazards, initiating actions to mitigate such issues.
- Compiles, analyzes data, and generates reports to identify trends and recommend improvements in environmental health practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Effective interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Proficiency in computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, database management, GIS, and Internet research.
