What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parent Consultant (CSHCS) position at Ottawa County?
Under the supervision of a Public Health Team Supervisor, provides outreach services for the Childrens Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) program by developing and helping distribute program information such as newsletters and community resources, maintaining a Facebook group, and coordinating training opportunities for families with children and youth with special needs. This role serves as a liaison between state and local program staff and families and contributes to building supportive networks for families. This is a longstanding grant-funded position through the CSHCS Family/Youth Engagement Program and the Family Center, intended to assist local CSHCS programs in creating opportunities for families and youth to participate in local activities.
This is a part-time non-benefited position working out of the Public Health building in Holland, MI. The hours vary and are flexible, you will average less than 10 hours per week. The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Implements annual grant objectives to enhance awareness, support, and advocacy for and by families of individuals with special needs, completes grant reporting requirements.
- Plans, creates, and helps distribute communications such as newsletters and social media posts, featuring community resources and relevant information for parents/caregivers and families.
- Maintains and manages a Facebook group for parents and caregivers of children and youth with special needs, which offers peer-to-peer support and comprehensive resource information.
- Develops, organizes, and facilitates training opportunities for families, caregivers, and professionals (medical, educational, and others) who work with families of children and youth with special needs.
- Conducts program outreach activities to establish community connections, raise awareness of CSHCS and Family Center services, increase program enrollment, and foster family advocacy and support.
- Works collaboratively with CSHCS team, families, care providers, and community partners to ensure cohesive program delivery and support.
- Assists in administering customer experience surveys and utilizes caregiver feedback to improve service delivery and outcomes.
- Contributes to an equitable, safe, and inclusive work environment.
- Stays informed about relevant resources and updates to effectively serve as a knowledgeable resource for families and the community.
- Performs other duties as assigned. Note – primary job functions may differ annually to align with grant requirements.
High school diploma or GED combined with at least two years of experience providing administrative support in a medical or public health setting.
Lived experiences with children who have special physical, behavioral, developmental, or emotional needs are valued and preferred.
Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license is required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Strong interpersonal and customer relations skills, with the ability to interact positively and professionally with others.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to effectively present information to diverse audiences.
- Thorough working knowledge of healthcare and community resources available to client populations.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Office 365 and other relevant software solutions.
- Good working knowledge of the Michigan Public Health Code and the Children's Special Health Care Services program.
- Familiarity with social media platforms, including experience managing Facebook groups and handling administrative responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a normal office environment, schools, therapy offices, doctor’s offices, and other community locations.
