Job Summary:
The Road and Bridge Laborer is responsible for performing tasks involving physical labor, semi-skilled equipment operation at sites. This position may perform general laborer duties related to bridge construction or repair, as well as duties related to asphalt work and preparation. This position may operate hand and power tools of all types, operate light equipment, and may assist other workers, performing duties while maintaining safety of site for all workers and the public. This position will interact with customers to provide information in response to inquiries about services and to handle and resolve any issues while delivering the highest level of customer service to Ottawa County.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operates a variety of vehicles, included but not limited to, light equipment vehicles, mowers, pickup trucks, single axle dump trucks, small front-end loader, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Operates power tools such as chainsaws and weed eaters.
- Operates equipment and do assigned work observing safety rules and common-sense practices.
- Completes clean up of the yard and/or shop buildings, and general utility work.
- Performs general laborer duties related to road work such as flagging traffic, trimming trees, cutting brush, grass and weeds, and replacing traffic control signs.
- Cleans up roadside debris.
- Assists with snow and ice removal.
- Performs duties related to bridge construction or repair such as patching bridge surfaces, replacing bridge planks, and setting forms for concrete.
- Performs duties related to asphalt work and preparation for asphalt work, and general clean up after.
- Works with other departments to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Must possess high school diploma or GED.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Kansas Driver’s License during all times of employment with Ottawa County. Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of employment.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, and random testing throughout employment.
- Must obtain thorough knowledge of heavy and light machinery and equipment, hand and power tools.
- Must obtain knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of roads, bridges, culverts and other department infrastructure.
Pay: $15.00 per hour without CDL
$16.00 per hour with CDL
