Job Overview
The Ottawa County Weed Department is seeking a dedicated and skilled Operator to join our team. This is a Non-Exempt full-time position, working Monday thru Friday 08:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in farm and landscape operations, with experience in operating various machinery and tools. This role is essential for maintaining the efficiency of our operations while ensuring the highest quality of work.
Responsibilities:
The Noxious Weed Spray Operator is responsible for performing skilled manual labor while mixing and applying chemical to noxious and other weed infestations, in accordance with federal, state and local regulations, policies and procedures. This position is required to operate and maintain all department machinery and erecting and replacing 911 road name signs.
Skills:
- Proficient in operating farm machinery and landscape equipment.
- Strong knowledge of pest control methods and practices.
- Experience with power tools and hand tools relevant to landscaping and farming tasks.
- Ability to drive vehicles safely and responsibly for work-related purposes.
- Consults with the Noxious Weed Administrator on matters relating to department operations.
- Mixes and loads toxic chemicals.
- Remits to the County Treasurer all monies that are collected by the Noxious Weed Department.
- Assists with ensuring that the County Noxious Weed building and equipment is maintained and in good condition by performing general maintenance and upkeep, along with ground maintenance and upkeep.
- Maintains all required certifications by state law and shall provide a copy to the Ottawa County Clerk’s office for personnel file
- Ensures that all safety policies and regulations are followed and adhered to, including keeping all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) current.
Qualifications:
- Must possess high school diploma or GED.
- Must possess valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at all times during employment with Ottawa County.
- Must have or be able to obtain a Commercial Applicators License with categories 6 and 9A. Time frame for training will be determined.
- Must be able to pass the Basic Course offered by the State Board of Agriculture. Time frame for training will be determined.
- Must obtain Forklift Certification. Time frame for training will be determined.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment strength testing, and pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, as well as random testing throughout employment.
- Must obtain knowledge of chemicals and their properties and how they affect plants in general.
- Must obtain knowledge of equipment, building maintenance, and equipment used to perform everyday requirements for the job.
- Ability to organize and schedule times to spray chemicals.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to speak effectively to customers in a professional manner, along with other County personnel.
Physical Demands:
- Frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting or climbing.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Will spend a large amount of time viewing a computer screen.
- Ability to frequently lift up to sixty (60) pounds.
Work Environment
- Regularly exposed to various toxic chemicals.
- Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.
- Exposed to outside weather conditions.
- Noise level is moderate and loud at certain times.
