JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for providing high quality and engaging instruction and academic or professional mentoring to learners in the didactic and/or clinical phase of the program. Teaches and advises students enrolled in a University course for which the adjunct instructor is assigned to teach. Course content is developed under University curriculum standards. The adjunct instructor is hired to teach on a course by course basis as a temporary employee of the University.

Ottawa University is accepting applications for potential openings for Adjunct Instructor positions. The need for these positions is undetermined at this time and is dependent on operational need including enrollment and staffing 

 

If you are interested in teaching in a university setting, it can be helpful to gain experience as an adjunct instructor. Many of our adjunct instructors hold a full-time career elsewhere, and choose to teach in our evening, weekend, and online programs so that they may have the opportunity to teach students.

 

Ottawa University employs adjunct instructors to teach undergraduate/graduate level coursework for its adult campuses. Each location has an Academic Coordinator/Academic Dean dedicated to hiring for adjunct teaching responsibilities.

 

ESSENTIONAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
 

  • Teaching and Curriculum: Responsible for delivering classroom learning experiences and clinical skills instruction based on the individual’s qualifications (didactic).
  • Teaching Standards: Maintain a high standard in classroom teaching through engaging and effective pedagogy, exhibiting awareness and understanding of best practices in graduate education through application in the classroom, simulation lab, and remaining current within one area on instruction and/or discipline.
  • Assessment and Remediation (by course director): evaluate learner performance:  provide remediation instruction in the didactic phase of the program. The program provides remediation in the clinical phase.
  • Programmatic Assessment and Evaluation:
    • Complete lecture or course evaluation.
  • Mentoring:
    • Support learner as a mentor.     
    • Identify opportunities for learner to succeed and notify the program.
    • Support efforts in retention.
  • Syllabus: It is expected that the adjunct instructor will follow the content sequences and assignments as outlined in standardized syllabi; however, they govern their classrooms by moderating discussions, setting the tone, choosing emphases, and inflecting content with their knowledge and experience, in the spirit of academic freedom. Curriculum standards and expectations are set and governed by the University Provost and School Deans.
  • Student Service/Support: Provide a student centered course experience and be available to all students throughout  the complete course term. Provide contact information on the course syllabus so that each student can readily contact the instructor.
  • General Expectations: Promote Ottawa University to the community(ies) represented. Regularly and actively use the Ottawa.edu e-mail address that is given to you as an Ottawa University Adjunct Instructor. Understand that communication is provided from the University will come through the Ottawa assigned e-mail address and the University Portal which is provided to each Adjunct Instructor.

  • Complete preceptor evaluation if a preceptor.
  • Mentoring:
  • Support learner as a mentor.

Qualifications


Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION: (education based on essential job duties and requirements consistent with business necessity):
PA must be NCCPA certified.
MD, DO, or APRN must be licensed.
Must possess a master’s, Ph.D., or doctorate to teach at the master’s level.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: (experience based on requirements in role and are consistent with business necessity):
At least one year as a clinically practicing PA-C (if not a PA-C, at least one year in profession).   


ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: List required and/or preferred certification, industry specific requirements, required or preferred use of equipment, and all necessary job skills, abilities, and knowledge competencies) Provide a list of items below:

  • Must be qualified through academic preparation and/or experience to teach assigned subjects.
  • Must be knowledgeable in course content and effective in teaching assigned subjects
  • Assigned Subjects we are hiring for: Anatomy & Physiology or Pharmacology or Microbiology and Genetics, or Research and Evidenced-Based Medicine or Pediatrics and Adolescents Medicine or Geriatrics, or Behavioral and mental Health (Psychiatry) or Infectious Disease.
  • Program faculty must be qualified through academic preparation and/or experience to teach assigned subjects.
  • Program faculty must be knowledgeable in course content and effective in teaching assigned subjects.
  • Experience with Blackboard or other similar online course platforms.
  • Experience with Zoom, Skype, or WebEx

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting must be able to lift 5-15 pounds at times.
  • It may require the use of building stairs.
  • It may require evening and/or weekend work.
  • The position sits and works in front of a computer screen.
