Job Overview: 

 

Environmental Scientist with 0-2 years of experience in environmental restoration projects, preferably for United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) or other federal and state government agencies. Prospective candidates must have experience working in remote locations in inclement weather. The work schedule will be a combination of office, urban, and field work, including locations such as Unalaska and/or other areas of rural Alaska.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

·       Collaborates with the Project Manager and Lead Scientist in developing work plans and schedules.

·       Collaborates with the Site Superintendent and Lead Scientist to execute approved work plans.

·       Serves as the field environmental scientist and other technical staff in data collection, data management, site investigation, evaluation of data collected, and remediation activities to support project objectives.

·       Assist the Lead Scientist in equipment procurement and project set up.

·       Must take good field notes and documentation.

·       Conduct site reconnaissance, including sampling activities.

·       Prepare deliverables with quality supporting documentation (site figures, appendices, reports, ect.).

·       Willingness to perform tasks to ensure project success such as manual labor and office work.

 

Required Skills:

·       Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.

·       Must have experience working around heavy equipment.

·       Must be able to effectively communicate in verbal and written communications.

·       Must be proficient with Microsoft office products.

·       Must be highly organized.

·       Must be self-motivated.

·       Must be able to exercise effective time management.

·       Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

 

Preferred (but not required):

·       GIS experience using ArcGIS.

·       Experience in environmental fieldwork such as contaminated soil sampling and removal, monitoring well installation and sampling, and phase I/II site investigations.

 

·       Knowledge of RCRA, and CERCLA regulations.

·       Working knowledge of mapping grade GPS devises.

·       Experience with statistical analysis.

 

Education & Certifications: 

·       BS in a science or engineering field (Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, etc.).

·       Hazardous materials training (Preferred).

·       HAZWOPER certification (Preferred).

 

Position requirements:

·       Pre-employment drug & alcohol screening and/or random drug screen.

·       Pre-employment criminal background history check.

·       Must have or be willing to obtain 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.

·       HAZWOPER physical and respirator fit test.

 

 

Physical Demands:

Work inside and outside. Ability to bend, reach, lift and carry up to 40 lbs.  Can work effectively and safely in inclement weather to include high winds, rain, and snow. Most of the field work will occur between April – November. May require travel in helicopter, aircraft, ATVs, and watercraft for short periods of time.
