Job Summary:
The Senior Director of Executive Communications is primarily responsible for managing organizational reputation and executive presence, while also overseeing media relations and public messaging. Their role is both strategic and highly reactive and focuses on immediate press engagement, crisis response, and public positioning – while also building a stronger foundation for the future by positioning key executives in public speaking roles, panels, thought leadership pieces, etc. This role works directly with the CEO and as part of the marketing communications team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Stakeholder & Policy Communications: Engages with opinion leaders, government entities, advocacy groups, and corporate partners to shape public perception.
- Spokesperson Duties: Act as the public face of the organization when necessary, delivering official statements and responding to press inquiries.
- Media Relations: Builds relationships with journalists, issues press releases and manages press conferences.
- Crisis Communications: Rapidly formulates responses to media crises, controlling the narrative.
- Briefings & Talking Points: Prepares and delivers daily briefings for leadership, ensuring consistent messaging.
- Interview Preparation: Prepares executives for media appearances, ensuring alignment with strategic messaging.
- Monitoring Media Sentiment: Tracks news coverage, identifies risks, and adjusts messaging accordingly.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in public relations and communications, with strong connections to media outlets in Minnesota and the national level.
- Expertise working with the CEO and leaders at all levels across the organization, especially senior leader engagement.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and inspire a team.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Writing and presentation samples will be requested.
- Strong strategic thinking and planning abilities, with a track record of implementing successful public relations and communication campaigns.
- Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms, including social media.
- Ability to manage crisis communication effectively and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Ability to lead and manage issue-focused and advocacy campaigns.
- Experience working with elected officials or government agencies is a plus.
