Under the general supervision of Family Court Services Director, the Mediator assigned to the office of the Family Court Commissioner to provide assistance to through mediation to single and divorcing parents to facilitate an agreement regarding the custody and/or physical placement of the children that focuses on the best interests of the children, to conduct court ordered custody/placement studies with recommendations to the court, to conduct court ordered stepparent adoption screenings, and to facilitate Children Caught in the Middle orientation/co-parenting education classes. This is a part-time position with an expectation that the employee work 20 to 23 hours per week. State Retirement eligibility is based on the employee working minimally 23 hours per week or or staying under 1,200 hours annually.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all -inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Assists with clients through mediation to focus on best interest of the children when working out custody and physical placement agreements.
Provides shuttle mediation when needed.
Drafts written agreements solidifying the parents' mediated decisions and future actions with regard to their children's welfare.
Interviews parents and children as needed to determine the best interests and needs of the children as well as the abilities of the parents.
Conducts court ordered custody/placement studies of parents where mediation is not appropriate or has failed.
Consults and coordinates with co-worker on court ordered custody studies.
Conducts court ordered stepparent adoption screenings.
Drafts written evaluations and screening reports, and makes recommendations to the court.
Testifies in court as needed regarding appropriate custody and physical placement guidelines.
Completes written materials and record filings within the time constraints of department criteria and court directives.
Facilitates co-parent education seminars for parents regarding children who are being raised by divorced or never married parents.
Collaborates with co-workers to update or revamp co-parent educational seminars.
Attends and participates in staff meetings, and education informational meetings.
Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours/Fridays as required. Must have flexibility in schedule to meet caseload and department demands.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Master's degree from an accredited school of social work, psychology or counseling; appropriate state certificate; and a minimum of one year experience in mediation;
Preference given to candidates who already have the 25 hours of mediation training as required by the State of Wisconsin.
Or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate safety regulations.

Ability to provide a writing sample to the Director ahead of an interview.

Demonstrated reliability in attendance and flexibility to work hours.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and figure simple mathematical calculations.

Ability to life, carry, push, pull, and move objects up to 20 pounds, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
Ability to drive and must have a driver’s license and reliable transportation.
