Clinical Director – Outdoor Talk
Location: Flexible, outdoor-based (mountain trails, lakesides, forests)
Reports To: Founder/CEO
About Us:
At Outdoor Talk, we’re redefining how therapy works by taking it out of the office and into nature. We believe in the power of conversation while moving through the great outdoors, whether on a mountain trail, by the lake, or in the forest. Our mission is simple: we help people talk it out, outdoors, so life feels solid again. With licensed professionals who are also adventurers, we’re committed to helping people break through the stress, burnout, and overwhelm they face—without the confines of traditional therapy.
As we continue to grow, we’re looking for a Clinical Director who shares our passion for both outdoor adventure and mental wellness, someone who will lead our clinical team with expertise, compassion, and a focus on making our therapy experience both effective and invigorating.
Position Overview:
The Clinical Director will be responsible for overseeing and guiding the clinical staff at Outdoor Talk. This individual will ensure our team of professional listeners, advice-givers, and teachers provide the highest standard of care in the unique setting of nature. The Clinical Director will be a hands-on leader, supporting the team’s professional growth while maintaining the quality and integrity of our services. This role combines leadership, mentorship, clinical expertise, and the opportunity to redefine therapy in a setting that’s dynamic, active, and forward-thinking.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, supervise, and support a growing team of licensed therapists who deliver therapy outdoors.
- Conduct regular clinical supervision and provide mentorship to therapists, ensuring they stay aligned with our mission and standards.
- Foster a collaborative and positive team environment where therapists feel supported and empowered to thrive in both their personal and professional growth.
Clinical Excellence:
- Oversee all aspects of clinical care, ensuring that Outdoor Talk’s outdoor therapy model meets the highest standards of evidence-based practice.
- Develop and implement training programs to ensure all clinical staff maintain and enhance their skills, particularly in outdoor settings.
- Provide clinical consultation to therapists as needed, helping them work through challenging cases or ethical dilemmas.
- Regularly review client feedback and clinical outcomes to ensure therapy is effective and clients feel heard, supported, and empowered.
Innovation & Program Development:
- Continuously refine and expand the outdoor therapy model to ensure it remains at the forefront of mental health care.
- Collaborate with the leadership team to explore new offerings, whether through workshops, group therapy sessions, or retreats, all designed to make therapy more accessible and impactful.
- Champion Outdoor Talk’s core values and communicate the importance of our approach both internally and externally.
Community Engagement & Marketing:
- Serve as a key spokesperson for Outdoor Talk in both professional settings and the broader community.
- Help articulate the value of our approach through media appearances, talks, and written content, ensuring our message is clear and resonates with potential clients.
- Provide insights and direction to the marketing team, ensuring all messaging stays aligned with our brand and mission.
Administrative & Operational Leadership:
- Ensure all clinical staff are adhering to ethical guidelines, licensure requirements, and organizational policies.
- Oversee and manage the clinical side of the business, including scheduling, caseload management, and ensuring the appropriate level of care for clients.
- Work closely with the leadership team to address organizational goals, staffing needs, and the continued growth of the business.
- Handle escalated client situations when necessary, ensuring the best possible care and resolution.
Key Qualifications:
- A licensed psychologist, therapist, or counselor with a minimum of 7 years of clinical experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Experience in outdoor therapy or adventure-based therapy is a plus, but a strong willingness to adapt to this unique modality is essential.
- Proven track record of leading a clinical team and managing a growing service or practice.
Clinical Expertise:
- Strong foundation in evidence-based therapy techniques and the ability to apply these principles effectively in an outdoor setting.
- Familiarity with common stress-related challenges such as burnout, overwhelm, and general anxiety (not as a focus on deep clinical diagnoses like depression or addiction).
- Ability to manage and balance the needs of clients and staff in a highly dynamic, non-traditional therapy environment.
Cultural Fit:
- A love for the outdoors and a passion for blending nature with mental health care.
- A down-to-earth, authentic, and approachable demeanor that fits our non-pretentious brand tone.
- Comfortable with minimal formal therapeutic language, using straightforward communication that is action-oriented and optimistic.
Leadership & Communication Skills:
- Ability to provide both clinical guidance and emotional support to staff while maintaining professionalism.
- Excellent communication skills, both in team settings and when engaging with clients or the broader community.
- A proactive, solution-oriented mindset with the ability to stay calm under pressure.
