Position Overview: As an Ophthalmic Technician / Scribe, you will play a key role in assisting ophthalmologists with patient care by performing diagnostic tests, taking medical histories, and documenting clinical encounters. You will also be cross-trained as a patient service representative and office assistant, providing support to ensure smooth office operations, including scheduling, answering calls, and assisting with patient inquiries.
Key Responsibilities:
Ophthalmic Technician / Scribe Duties:
- Assist ophthalmologists and optometrists with patient examinations, including conducting pre-examination testing (visual acuity, tonometry, refraction, visual fields, OCTs, pre-surgical measurements, etc.).
- Accurately document patient medical histories, exam findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans during physician encounters.
- Maintain patient records in the electronic health record (EHR) system and ensure accurate and timely documentation.
- Prepare patients for exams and procedures, explaining processes and answering any questions.
- Assist doctors and patients with Light Adjustable Lens lock-in treatments.
- Operate and maintain ophthalmic equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
- Assist with minor in-office procedures as needed.
- Perform Mibo Thermoflo dry eye heat treatments.
Patient Service Representative & Office Assistant Duties:
- Greet and check in patients, verify insurance information, and handle patient intake.
- Schedule, confirm, and manage patient appointments, including reminders and follow-ups.
- Answer patient phone calls, direct inquiries to the appropriate staff, and provide general information.
- Assist with patient account management, including billing and insurance verification.
- Ensure a clean and organized front office and patient waiting area.
- Perform various administrative duties to support the team as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; certification in ophthalmic technology (COA, COT, or similar) preferred.
- Previous experience as an ophthalmic technician, medical scribe, or in a medical office is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of ophthalmic procedures and terminology is a plus.
- Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems and medical documentation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work closely with patients and healthcare professionals.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks efficiently.
- Cross-training or experience in patient services and office administration is a plus.
