Job Summary­­­­­­_____________________________________________________________
The Technical Associate 1 will work under the supervision of the Director of Production to ensure the successful technical execution of performances, special events, and rentals for the Overture Center.   Work involves coordinating both equipment and event staff (stagehands) for theatrical staging and lighting, audio/visual, closed circuit, IT, and general communication services.


Roles & Responsibilities_____________________________________________________________

  • Coordinates and/or performs the set up/tear down of all Overture Center-owned theatrical staging, audio/visual, closed circuit, computer and networking, theatrical sound and lighting, and electrical equipment to be used for events at the Center, including working at heights from aerial trucks, lifts, and ladders.
  • Completes daily work orders, time sheets, and billing information. Follows the appropriate procedures for recordkeeping, billing systems, and rates.
  • Performs basic data retrieval functions in VenueOps (event services software).
  • Determines the appropriate response to urgent situations, operational problems, and short-notice situations. Directs and oversees the activities of assigned Stagehands accordingly.
  • Provides training, direction, and guidance to stage staff appropriate to their skill level. Gives feedback to supervisor on stagehand staff performance.
  • Instructs other staff and clients on the proper use of equipment, monitors equipment use, and assistance as needed. Ensures adherence to safety and theatrical standards, reviews work of Stagehands to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Aids in the collection and tracking of stagehand hours for the purposes of accurate payroll processing.
  • Together with higher-level staff, lends insight to clients to assess and plan theatrical staging, lighting, sound, counterweight, rigging, communication, computers, and networking, audio/visual, and/or electrical requirements for various types of events.
  • Advises staff on the capabilities of Overture Center equipment and systems and provides information relative to the availability, cost, compatibility with other equipment, and techniques for achieving desired results based on their experience.
  • Maintains and cleans equipment and performs necessary preventative maintenance. Performs troubleshooting, modification, and repair of theatrical lighting, audio/visual, closed circuit, and electronic equipment.  Researches and recommends outside vendors for major specialized repairs or modifications.
  • Operates Overture Center’s theatrical, audio/visual, and other “high tech” equipment not suited for direct use by clients or stagehand staff.
  • Embraces and participates in the advancement of the JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) mission and vision of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications____________________________________________________________________
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Technical degree in Electronics, Welding, Carpentry, or related area preferred.
  • Specific positions may require training in areas such as lighting, sound, carpentry, welding, or rigging, to be completed during the probation/trial period. Such requirements will be established at the time a position is filled.  Failure to complete the required training may cause the employee to not pass the probation/trial period.
  • 3 years relevant training and/or experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the methods and practices used in the general installation, testing, operation, and maintenance of theatrical lighting, audio/visual, electronic, computer, and telephone equipment and electrical connections associated with the entertainment industry and knowledge of the related tools and materials.
  • Working knowledge of sound reinforcement, lighting, computers and networks, closed circuit television, and related audio/visual and electronic practices and equipment as they relate to entertainment and performance activities.
  • Knowledge of theatrical production terms and techniques and the ability to produce desired stage and lighting effects.
  • Knowledge of billing procedures relating to the use of contracted Stagehands and related positions.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety procedures and equipment.
  • Consistently delivers a high level of customer service to both internally and externally.
  • Ability to use specialized electronic testing and repair equipment.
  • Ability to work from schematics, penciled layouts, blueprints, and specifications, and to use documented programs.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, work under tight deadlines, pay considerable attention to details, and resolve operational problems effectively.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both in writing and orally, on the telephone and by using portable radios.
  • Ability to give, understand, and follow oral and written work orders and instructions.
  • Ability to use a computer to perform recordkeeping and report preparation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with promoters, clients, and guests exercising personal judgment and initiative in resolving conflicts.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license or ability to meet the transportation requirements of the job.

 

Working Conditions­­­­_______________________________________________________________

The requirements and conditions described below are representative of the general environment the employee is exposed to on a day-to-day basis while performing this job.

  • Must be able to operate a computer and telephone and to use/manipulate sophisticated, high-tech theatrical equipment.
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds occasionally, 50-70 pounds frequently, and 20-25 pounds on a regular basis. Ability to engage in strenuous activity for long periods of time, respond effectively to emergency situations, operate and work from such equipment as aerial lift trucks, and be able to work form heights using ladders.
  • Use of computer, telephone, theatrical and electrical equipment, electronic testing, and repair equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to moderately disagreeable conditions such as heat, noise, and heights.
