Position Description
Title: Secondary Math and/or Science Teacher
Reports to: High School Principal
Salary Wage: Competitive salaries and benefits under the Ovid-Elsie Teachers’ Contract
Responsibilities:
Ovid-Elsie Area Schools seeks an experienced and innovative educator to teach high school mathematics/science. We are looking for an educator that has a solid foundation in mathematics/science with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher. We seek an individual who is confident in developing an engaging and rigorous curriculum that meets the varied needs of students in his/her class.
The ability to establish rapport with students; to motivate students; to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for continuing mathematics education in accordance with each student’s ability; to establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.
Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:
- Creating a flexible program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth.
- Teaching high school mathematics/science to students in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instructing students in citizenship and basic subject matter.
- Developing lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Using a variety of instruction strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, lecture, discovery, etc.
- Translating lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
- Establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Evaluating students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
- Communicating with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress and interpret the school program.
- Identifying student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Creating an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Maintaining professional competence through in-service education activities provided by professional growth activities.
- Participating cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with guidelines.
- Selecting and requisitioning books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
- Supervising students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day.
- Administering group standardized tests in accordance with the state testing program.
- Participating in curriculum development programs as required.
- Participating in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in related subject(s) from an accredited university.
- Michigan Teacher Certificate and Highly Qualified Status.
- Knowledge of Michigan Common Core.
- Secondary level Mathematics (EX) endorsement required.
- Additional teaching certificate endorsements preferred
- DI or DX (Integrated Science)
- DE (Physics)
- DC (Chemistry)
- First Aid and CPR.
