Position Description
Title : Paraprofessional – Special Education
Location : Knight Elementary
Reports to : Rachelle Parsons, Special Education Director
Salary and Benefits : Per Article 17 of the Paraprofessional Agreement. District- paid health insurance, paid sick days and paid holidays.
Work Schedule : Monday through Friday (only days when school is in session)
Summary :
The Special Education Paraprofessional assists the teacher in providing for the physical and instructional needs of an individual student with moderate to severe disabilities. The paraprofessional assists with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including self-help, behavioral management, and instructional programs
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Under the supervision of a certified teacher :
- Exhibits good communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
- Assist in the implementation of Individualized Education Programs for students and monitor progress.
- Help manage the behavior of assigned students, as needed.
- Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s communication, emotional, instructional, medical, physical, sensory, and social needs.
- Utilize effective communication skills : ensure that all interactions with students, district personnel, and parents are supportive, courteous, and respectful.
- Maintain student behavior through appropriate and approved interventions and approved techniques.
- Assist students in meeting educational goals while providing appropriate academic interventions as directed by classroom teachers.
- Support students in the school environment physically and academically, behaviorally, and socially.
- Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal / written directives.
- Maintain confidentiality
- Ensure students safety through close supervision
- Other duties as assigned by the principal / special education director.

Physical Demands :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, and hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust / focus.
Work Environment :
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
Mental Functions :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
