Job Summary:
An outpatient pharmacy technician supports pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care to patients, including assisting with the preparation and dispensing of medications, managing inventory, ensuring the pharmacy is compliant with regulations, and providing customer service. They play a crucial role in ensuring smooth pharmacy operations and delivering high-quality care to outpatient patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Medication Preparation and Dispensing:
- Assist pharmacists in preparing and dispensing prescriptions, ensuring medications are accurately measured, labeled, and packaged.
- Verify prescription information, including dosage and drug interactions, under the supervision of the pharmacist.
- Maintain patient medication records, ensuring accurate details for each prescription filled.
- Inventory Management:
- Assist in managing pharmacy inventory, including receiving, stocking, and organizing medications and supplies.
- Monitor medication expiration dates and assist in the disposal of expired or recalled medications.
- Conduct regular inventory checks and ensure medications are stored properly.
- Customer Service:
- Greet and assist patients, answering questions regarding prescriptions, over-the-counter products, and health inquiries.
- Provide patient education, such as explaining dosage instructions, potential side effects, and proper medication storage.
- Process prescription orders and assist with insurance claims or billing inquiries.
- Medication Labeling and Documentation:
- Accurately label medications with appropriate instructions and safety information.
- Maintain accurate records of prescriptions filled, medication logs, and patient profiles.
- Assist with data entry for medication therapy management and patient counseling programs.
- Regulatory Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure the pharmacy is compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations, including those related to controlled substances.
- Follow safety protocols and procedures to prevent medication errors, including checking for drug interactions and allergies under the supervision of the pharmacist.
- Handle medication safely and securely, ensuring proper documentation for controlled substances.
- Administrative Tasks:
- Process and prepare prescriptions for insurance claims, verify patient eligibility, and handle billing issues.
- Assist with administrative functions such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and managing patient records.
- Sterile Compounding (if applicable):
- In some outpatient settings, pharmacy technicians may assist with preparing sterile medications, such as injections or IVs, under the guidance of a pharmacist.
- Patient Care Support:
- Help in providing medication therapy management support, ensuring patients receive the appropriate medications for their conditions.
- Alert pharmacists to any potential issues with prescriptions or patient concerns.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a pharmacy technician training program.
- Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) required.
- Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, medications, and medical terminology.
- Ability to operate pharmacy equipment, such as pill counters, labeling machines, and computers.

Working Conditions:

- Regular hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 8-5. Thursdays 8-8.
