By evaluating project plans, specifications, and other documents, the estimator calculates material, labor, and equipment costs. This involves close collaboration with architects, engineers, subcontractors, and other construction professionals to ensure that bids are competitive and align with project requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Vendor and Subcontractor Coordination: Obtain quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, evaluating proposals to ensure they meet project requirements and budgets.
  • Preparation of Bids: Prepare and submit competitive and comprehensive bids for projects, collaborating with project managers and senior staff to finalize bid submissions.
  • Site Visits and Assessments: Visit project sites to assess existing conditions, conduct measurements, and identify potential challenges affecting project costs.
  • Collaboration with Project Team: Work closely with architects, engineers, project managers, and other team members to ensure estimates align with project goals and specifications.
  • Risk Management: Identify and evaluate potential risks associated with the project, including contingency plans in the cost estimates.
  • Maintain Records: Keep accurate and organized records of estimates, bids, and relevant documents for future reference.
  • Monitor and Update Estimates: Regularly review and update cost estimates as the project progresses, accounting for changes or unforeseen conditions.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: 3 years of experience in construction estimating, with a strong understanding of construction processes, materials, and industry standards.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with construction estimating software (e.g., ProEst, Buildertrend, Sage, or similar tools) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze project plans and specifications to accurately estimate costs.
  • Attention to Detail: Excellent attention to detail and precision when estimating quantities, materials, and labor costs.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with clients, subcontractors, and team members.
  • Time Management: Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of Construction Codes and Standards: Understanding of local building codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with specific construction types (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial).
  • Certification in construction estimating (e.g., AACE Certified Estimating Professional (CEP) or similar certification).
  • Familiarity with construction scheduling and project management principles.
