TITLE: HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE DIRECTOR


REPORTS TO: Principal/Dean of Instruction and Coordinator of Fine Arts


JOB GOAL: To lead students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional and psychological growth and maturation.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Kentucky Teacher Certificate or Statement of Eligibility
  • Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with Teaching Certification
  • Past experience in successful theatre programs preferred

SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS:


This position involves teaching multiple levels of theatre including Theatre I, Advanced Theatre, Production Basics, and collaborative teaching of Technical Theatre/Theatre Art. As well as directing productions in each of the above courses each semester.


Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Plan, direct, and oversee theatre production including management of elements such as sets, costumes, props, and lighting.
  • Meet co-curricular expectations regarding casting, rehearsals, and individual student coaching as needed after school hours
  • Provide creative vision to maintain and continually elevate the theatre program
  • Plan collaboratively with performing arts staff for musical theatre productions
  • Plan collaboratively with visual art staff regarding prop and set design
  • Maintain accurate records of costumes, props, and program history
  • Plan, direct and oversee the extracurricular activities and productions of the Rose Curtain Players
  • Plan, direct, and oversee the extracurricular activities and events of the school’s International Thespian Society troupe.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the location and at the times designated.
  • Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
  • Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the locations provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Strives to implement by instruction and action the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Diagnoses the learning abilities of students and evaluates student progress on a regular basis.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
  • Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and Board policies.
  • Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms through appropriate parent teacher conferences.
  • Individually and cooperatively with other teachers, supervises pupils in and out of classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings and serves on assigned committees.
  • Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Accepts a shared responsibility for co-curricular activities.
  • Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.
  • Provides for his/her own professional growth in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Represents the school in the community effectively and in a positive manner.
  • Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours.
  • Meets the Standards and Indicators set forth in the Certified Personnel Evaluation Plan.
  • Abides by the Professional Code of Ethics for Kentucky Certified School Personnel.
  • Adheres to the requirements of any District or school employee handbook, Owensboro Board of Education policies, and all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Performs all other functions deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor that are reasonable and are covered by local board policy or law.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor, environmentally controlled. Typical office environment including but not limited to telephones, personal interruptions, background noises. May require working with or near the public, parents, and children and will be subject to sounds, scents, and other related environmental factors. This position will require dealing with conflict and requires use of sound judgment.

  • Less than 10% out of district

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Instructional salary schedule based on rank and experience plus increment.
  • Certified benefits package
  • Participates in Kentucky Teachers Retirement System (KTRS)
  • FLSA Classification: Exempt
  • 187 days
  • School year: 2025/2026

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Certified Personnel. Evaluation will be conducted by the designated supervisor.
