What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fisheries Technician position at Owl Ridge Natural Resource Consultants, Inc.?
Description: This position will work on two separate salmon smolt outmigration projects. The first project will assist Biologist with the operation of two rotary screw traps designed to capture out-migrating smolt on the George River. Duties will include capturing, identifying, collecting measurements from, enumerating, marking and entering data for out-migrating juvenile salmon. Other tasks will include camp, equipment and boat maintenance as well as other duties as assigned. The project site is remote, located on the George River, a tributary of the Kuskokwim River in Western Alaska. The project dates are from April 1st to June 17th.
The second project will be working with Biologist evaluating smolt and adult salmon conditions at the Village of Napaimute in association with a river turbine project being implemented this summer. The duties would include operating an inclined plane trap to capture salmon smolt to evaluate any potential blade strikes from the turbine, enumerating, identifying, collecting measurements from smolt and data entry. Additionally, the Technician would work with local subsistence fishers evaluating adult salmon catch from the Village fishwheel located upstream of the river turbine site. This project will operate from June 23rd until July 15th. This position will at times will be working without direct supervision and may be required to supervise other technicians and/or Interns.
Working Conditions: The first project will be stationed at a remote field camp on the George River, the second project will be based out of the Village of Napaimute. Both projects will be asked to perform duties in inclement weather. The candidate must also be willing to operate traps 24/7 in various hourly windows, including operating during night hours. Operations will be conducted on the river via boat and working on floating platforms that house the traps in the river. Exposure to animals, insects or contact with chemicals may occur. Housing will consist of cabins or arctic oven tents.

Salary Range: $27.50 – $30.00/hr., DOE
Hours: 40-60 hrs./wk., Overtime is authorized
