The Academic Division is the largest division of OUP, and responsible for Academic publishing around the world, including dictionaries and reference; higher education; scholarly, professional and trade books; Journals; and Online products. Its main offices are in Oxford and New York, but it also has a presence in Canada, India, China and Japan.


ABOUT THE ROLE

This is an exciting opportunity to join OUP as Acquisition Editor for Biology within the Academic Division’s Research Books Editorial function. This prestigious and visible role reports into the Head of Acquisition, Science, and the successful candidate will build content strategy and acquisitions in close conjunction with the Head of Acquisition and colleagues across the acquisitions team. With a strong emphasis on evidence-based, proactive content acquisition in line with market, customer, and online product portfolio needs, this position will further the Press’s publishing and research services in Research Books Editorial, enhance the scholarly reputation of the Press, and support the larger Content Strategy and Acquisitions team in positioning the Press successfully to respond to changes in research practice within the discipline as much as in our core markets.


The successful candidate will work effectively with colleagues across Research Editorial and in the wider business – including Product, Production, Sales, Marketing. They will also engage with external partners – including authors and editors, editorial boards, reviewers, OUP Delegates and University stakeholders, research funders, professional bodies, scholarly societies, and the wider academy.


ABOUT YOU

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with academic and scholarly publishing; knowledge of the discipline of Biology and experience with universities, scholarly societies, and/or professional bodies desirable
  • Experience with open access publishing and the launch and development of digital products is desirable
  • Proven track record of managing the commissioning process and title delivery/project management
  • Experience conducting market research and data analysis
  • Experience of building, maintaining, and utilizing networks within the publishing industry and relevant academic/professional communities
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new systems and processes
  • Experience training and/or mentoring others desired
  • Ability to work with peers and cross-functionally in a productive manner (including within the matrix management structure of the Press) towards a common purpose
  • Excellent written communication as well as strong presentation, interpersonal, and verbal skills

Position Location: This role can be hybrid, based out of New York, NY.

GJC Level: I6 (for internal purposes only)

Salary: $62,370- $93,555 dependent on skills and experience
