Aquatics Director

AQUATICS DIRECTOR 

LOCATION: Monett Area YMCA 

SUPERVISOR: Executive Director  

STATUS: Full Time/Exempt 

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Aquatics Director is responsible for the safety and well-being of the pool and the participants in the swim team program effectively and courteously, enforcing all pool rules, regulations, and policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Lead all Aquatics program staff teams to ensure programs and services meet community needs, supervising and evaluating existing program activities and establishing new programs including swim lessons, exercise classes and swim team.

1. Monitor daily pool operations of Monett pools making sure to adhere to all state, local, and YMCA health and safety regulations and best practices, including certifications.
2. Oversee cleaning and area organization of aquatics facilities as well as manage proper operation, chemical delivery and testing for indoor and outdoor pools. Maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
3. Recruit, hire and train staff; onboard and develop them for success by providing direction and leadership.
4. Assist in conducting lifeguard, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings, and monthly in-service trainings.
5. Ensures records of staff certifications and trainings are current and complete.
6. Creation and administration of annual aquatic budget to meet fiscal objectives; compiling program statistics to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in programs.
7. Scheduling pool facility, classes, practices and swim meets while maximizing pool and staff time. Schedule lifeguards and approve payroll.
8. Ensure the safety of all staff, members and guests in the aquatic areas and that all aquatic processes and practices are aligned with YMCA best practices.
9. Serve as a YMCA ambassador to all elements of the community, engage and lead aquatic staff in participation in our Annual Campaign.
10. Develops individualized swimming programs and educates swimmers on various techniques and styles. 
11. Retain participants through building positive relationships with the team and the community. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers, connecting them with each other and the YMCA.
12. Supervise pool area and ensure lifeguard staff are always monitoring and portraying professional behavior.  Ensure no distraction or interference with the ability to hear or see signs of distress.  Ability to fill in as lifeguard and instructor.
13. Ensure program quality and monitor staff performance and member service.

15. Be knowledgeable, understanding, and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Always keeping Safety at the forefront of your mind. 
16. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures with the team and provides leadership in emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, and procedures.  
17. Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.) and completes incident and accident reports, as necessary.
18. Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions.
19. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

1. At least 21 years of age with 2 years of related experience.
2. YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
3. CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.  
4. Have a CPO (Certified Pool Operator) certification or be able to obtain in the first 30 days of employment.
5. LGI (Lifeguard Instructor) certification or be able to obtain in the first six months of employment.
6. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
7. Excellent written communication skills. 
8. Proven verbal communication skills that impact human relations at all levels of responsibility, strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
9. Experienced teambuilding, programming, and project management skills 
10. Ability to take initiative, be flexible, use sound judgment, and work harmoniously with others.

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to respond to Emergencies at any time with sound judgment and physical aquatic lifesaving ability.
2. Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position for long periods of time, including walking, standing, bending, squatting, and kneeling.
3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. 
4. Ability to work in various outdoor temperatures including high heat and humidity.
5. Ability to lift up to 45 pounds.
6. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper swim techniques.
7. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
