Department Overview

The Geosciences Department provides a wide range of consulting services to internal PG&E clients. Our highly qualified team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) include geologists, geotechnical engineers, seismologists, and GIS professionals that support evaluation of geologic hazards, completion of geotechnical assessments, development of geospatial datasets informing risk evaluations, development of seismic resiliency programs, management of seismic risks for all company business lines, and related initiatives with the wider scientific and technical community. Our goal is to support safe, reliable, and affordable energy delivery, regulatory compliance, and efficient risk-informed business operations.

The group is also chartered with continuing to develop state of the art analytical insights, tools, and assessments of new data and interpretation of existing data with emergent technologies in geosciences, geotechnical engineering, and seismic engineering. Geosciences develops the seismic hazard information and performs risk analyses for PG&E's infrastructure including critical facilities such as the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP), dams, and gas and electric transmission lines.

Position Summary

The PG&E Geosciences Department is seeking candidates for a Senior Geologist position to assist with programmatic and project-specific work across the P&GE service territory. Practical experience in supporting geologic and geotechnical engineering assessments and construction is also highly desirable. The successful candidate should be able to obtain a professional geologist (PG) and certified engineering geologist (CEG) license in California when they have obtained the requisite experience.

The primary focus of this position will be to support PG&E's gas transmission Geohazards and Fault Crossing Programs, and PG&E's Electric Distribution Undergrounding Program, and related work including desktop geohazards detection and evaluation, field reconnaissance and characterization, monitoring, and site-specific mitigation if necessary.

Anticipated tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing oversight, coordination, and field support for geohazard inspections system wide.
  • Assisting with field and desktop geohazard assessment and report preparation.
  • Performing geologic and geomorphic mapping and interpreting geospatial and topographic data (e.g., Google Earth, LiDAR data)
  • Leveraging available public and private programmatic resources to perform preliminary desktop site assessments for geologic, geotechnical, and construction conditions.
  • Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications and related geospatial tools to plan and prioritize field work and to complete basic desktop analyses.
  • Reviewing technical reports prepared by Geosciences colleagues and consultants.
  • Logging borings and geologic mapping.
  • Supporting company Emergency Operations Center (EOC) response as Geosciences representative and SME.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to support activities as described above while working with a team of highly qualified and experienced Geosciences SMEs. While this role will primarily support gas transmission and electric distribution undergrounding programs, the candidate will have opportunities for exposure to geologic and geotechnical practice for a variety of utility infrastructure including electric transmission and hydroelectric assets. The vast PG&E service territory and diversity of infrastructure provides the opportunity for challenging interdisciplinary work in many geomorphic terranes throughout California. You will be teamed with experienced professionals from a variety of fields and will work with top consultants in engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. One to two days of fieldwork each week is typical and about six (6) full-week field mobilizations per year are expected.

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the Bay Area of the PG&E Service Territory.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.
