General Description :

The Waste Diversion Supervisor (WDS) is responsible for long term planning and implementing to achieve PLU’s goal of greater than 90% diversion rate ae well as ensuring the daily operational needs for recycling, composting, landfill services are met.. The WDS serves as primary contact for Environmental Services as a provider regarding waste diversion efforts at PLU. This position is strongly operationally focused with large students staff and complex operation. Reports to the Campus Service Manager Essential Functions and Responsibilities :

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Waste Diversion customer service calls.
  • Manage staff scheduling to ensure completion of daily operational needs.
  • Attend weekly PLUSS (PLU Service and Support) meetings.
  • Primary point of contact for external waste diversion service providers.
  • Identify “best practices” and programs in peer / benchmark initiatives
  • Coordinate and implement annual Recycle-Mania event and “Garbology” Waste Audit.
  • Coordinate waste diversion efforts for move in and move out.
  • Observe and refine operational processes to improve efficiency.
  • Maintain the recycling bay in an orderly manner.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Maintain and evaluate equipment for service and repair.
  • Maintain and evaluate waste diversion infrastructure for service and repair.
  • Stock required operational supplies.
  • Facilitate education of the campus community about PLU’s waste diversion efforts.
  • Pursue individual professional development around Waste Diversion and Zero Waste

programming in higher education.

  • Continually realign the essential functions of this position to best serve the University’s
  • long term Waste Diversion goals.

  • When appropriate, prepare and present materials related to PLU’s Waste Diversion
  • Program in classrooms, at conferences and committee meetings, both on and off-campus.

  • Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
  • Supervisory skills to foster a welcoming, productive, and educational environment when
  • managing a relatively large student staff.

  • Commitment to diversity; ability to work effectively with all constituencies in a diverse
  • institution.

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills and an attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze situations and problem-solve accordingly and efficiently.
  • Ability to clearly articulate and advocate for projects related to waste diversion.
  • Ability to facilitate conversations involving many different campus partners towards our
  • common goal.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate and foster relationships with university
  • constituents in public settings.

  • Ability to work independently and willingness to collaborate. Required Qualifications :
  • 2 years sustainability or resource management related work experience or related
  • education.

  • Forklift training certified or willingness to become certified.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers and a Microsoft Office environment,
  • including familiarity with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as the ability to learn and

    grasp new software applications as necessary to proficiently manage the area of

    responsibility

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Driver’s License (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2yrs).
  • Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check and
  • pass PLU’s Driver’s Certification Training. Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience with materials and / or waste diversion management.
  • Previous experience in higher education or work history in a Sustainability Office. Work Conditions :
  • Working outdoors is required.
  • May be exposed to noisy environments.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials.
  • Extended work hours into evenings and weekends is required the week of move out (last
  • week of May into June) and at other times as needed.

  • Some evening and weekend work may be required at other times.
