What are the responsibilities and job description for the Group Leader - Materials Science position at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory?
Overview
The Physical Sciences Division seeks a Group Leader (GL) for the Materials Sciences group, a diverse, multi-disciplinary basic and applied research group of ~60 staff members and postdoctoral research associates. We synthesize and characterize functional materials classes such as biologically inspired, structural, and electronic materials, and materials for energy capture, conversion, and storage. We seek outstanding candidates to lead this collaborative group and directly contribute to this research! Our overarching goal is to develop a predictive understanding of the physical principles that connect atomic-scale interactions to the behavior of ensembles of atomic and molecular species. This knowledge is transformed into predictive synthesis of complex nanostructured materials with controlled dimensionality, architectures, and functionalities over multiple length scales.
Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will be split nearly evenly between managerial duties (45%) and contributions to peer-reviewed research (55%). In the managerial role, you will provide leadership that will advance materials science broadly at PNNL. You will work with Lab Leadership to set the agenda for materials research directions at PNNL! You will also provide excellent management of a productive and influential research organization and elevate the efficiency and impact of the group.
Ensuring ongoing research programs in the group are productive and impactful is crucial. Maintaining effective operations including the management of overhead budgets to achieve operational targets is a key part of the role. We value mentoring and staff development. The ideal candidate will embrace facilitating proposal writing and identifying research opportunities for staff.
Scientific expectations include leading and contributing to fundamental peer-reviewed materials research. Active collaborations with research staff across Group and Division organizations in the Physical and Computational Science Directorate and across the Lab are encouraged. We will expect you to quickly establish yourself as an independent principal investigator (PI) through collaborative proposals.
Established nationally as an expert in at least one S&E domain. Establishing new approaches at a national level and advancing state of the art concepts. Conceives, plans, and executes R&D with considerable influence on scientific and technological developments. Displays considerable leadership in defining scientific and technical objectives across programs. Leads in the capture, planning, and technical execution of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across organizational boundaries with lab level impact, and outside of the laboratory. Captures and enables sufficient funding to support self and project teams. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. Contributes to directorate level or lab level operational improvement activities.
