Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization. EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.


Responsibilities

The Battery Materials and Systems Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory works on a diverse portfolio of storage technologies including Li-ion battery, redox flow battery, Na-metal halide battery, Na-ion battery, Pb-acid, and aqueous Zn batteries. The group is comprised of approximately 60 world-class scientists and engineers with diverse backgrounds in electrochemistry, materials science, and engineering, working on research projects that range from fundamental and applied material research to battery prototyping and demonstration, battery reliability testing, and safety codes and standards.

 

The Battery Materials & Systems Group seeks an outstanding researcher with a strong background in the development and testing of electrolytes. The primary focus of this position is to provide technical support to a growing team of scientists and engineers conducting fundamental and applied research and development of high throughput techniques and their application to aqueous battery electrolytes. This position will focus on using high throughput methods to develop electrolytes with improved properties (solubility, temperature window, etc.) and improved electrochemical performance.

 

Project work will include working with a high throughput system engineer to develop plans for electrolyte recipes and protocols for accelerated electrolyte formulation and property testing. Additionally, electrochemical testing of electrolyte formulations will be performed with voltammetry techniques and also with small-scale flow battery cycling. The candidate will work with a multidisplinary team for timely delivery of project milestones.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field, with demonstrated technical skills in a laboratory environment.
  • Prior experience with high throughput experimentation is a plus but is not required.
  • Strong background in experiment design and an ability to quickly learn and utilize new software.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated experience in characterizing and optimizing electrolytes for energy storage devices.
  • Prior experience with aqueous electrolytes would be a plus, but is not required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential.  To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation.  This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year.  This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.


Mandatory Requirements

Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle.
