Overview:
The Protective Force Corporal position is a full-time position with variable and flexible hours. The incumbent must be able to work flexible hours and shift work that are conducive to a 24/7 security operation, as well as be receptive to being called into work with short notice. The Corporal position is an essential employee and is required to work their scheduled shift during all lab holidays, closures, releases and delays. This position reports to the Protective Force Program Manager and receives direction from the Protective Force Lieutenant and Shift Sergeant, as appropriate. The position requires professionalism, initiative, drive, rigor, and accountability.

In addition to fulfilling Security Officer (SO) job functions, the Corporal position assists the Sergeant on their respective shifts during daily operations. In the absence of a Sergeant, the Corporal provides guidance for the Security Operations Center (SOC) and assigned SOs. During the Sergeants absence, Corporals are critical in ensuring the safety and security of PNNL staff, visitors, and facilities by initiating emergency response and management notifications as requested and outlined in operating procedures.

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include:

  • Deployment of management expectations; post deployment for alarm and public safety response, leading shift pass-on, providing input and recommendations for performance evaluations, documentation quality assurance, training, shift scheduling, and general oversight of SO staff.
  • The position requires the incumbent to perform physical activities, do moderate lifting, climb stairs, remain standing and sitting for extended periods of time, maintain alertness throughout long shifts, and utilize sensory awareness (visual, auditory, olfactory, etc.) in the performance of duties.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the Corporal for assigned shifts.
  • Perform all responsibilities, duties and tasks of a SO.
  • Demonstrate familiarity and compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Oversee procedural implementation, ensure it is followed appropriately and safely.
  • Direct and monitor shift operations in accordance with all guidelines.
  • Ensure a thorough flow of information is transferred from shift to shift.
  • Coordinate proper positioning of SOs to provide appropriate alarm, public safety response and shift turnover.
  • Ensure the integrity of the data entered in the Daily Activity Log or Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system.
  • Report to the Sergeant any SO who is routinely out of compliance with established standards or lacking successful adherence to performance indicators, such as, tardiness, sick leave, insubordination, poor attitude, time-card charges, failure to perform as expected, etc.
  • Ensure SO’s and oncoming Sergeant and/or Corporal are fit for duty as defined in SAP 101.
  • Provide training, as appropriate, to assigned SOs, ensuring all training requirements for responsible SOs are maintained.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma/GED and 4 years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • AA or higher and 2 years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least one year of PNNL Security Officer experience.
  • Associate Degree in Criminal Justice/Security field.
  • Military and or Law Enforcement experience.
  • Current Q clearance.
  • DOE MIT 111 Basic Instructor Certified.
Additional Information:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.

This position requires the following:
  • Valid state-issued driver's license
  • Applicants must possess the mental, sensory, and motor skills, and be medically fit, as required to safely and effectively perform all normal and emergency response job duties.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment (and biennially thereafter) physical and psychological exam per 10 Code of Federal Regulation part 1046.
Testing Designated Position (TDP):
This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
