Role Summary
As an Outdoor Gate Clerk, you will be on your feet most of the day inspecting intermodal units arriving and departing the railroad facility. This includes checking unit numbers and containers for damage, and completing necessary paperwork for the customer.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect all intermodal units for unit initial and number
- Maintain accuracy of all trailer/container inspections, ensuring security seals are intact.
- Document and oversee any damage to arriving or departing units promptly.
- Communicate all damage clearly on appropriate forms or computer systems.
- Understand risk assessment and risk management processes.
- Maintain a quality, accident & injury-free environment.
- Ensure compliance with HAZMAT and OSHA regulations.
- Wear required PPE, such as safety vests, toe boots, and hard hats.
- Maintain a safe distance from moving vehicles and ensure clearances are met.
- Pick up debris in inspection areas to keep the work environment clean.
- Verify temperature settings on refrigerator units.
- Take photographs of outgoing container cargo as needed.
- Complete all required paperwork for customers accurately.
- Maintain company values, rules, and productive relationships with customers and vendors.
- Perform special tasks as requested by management or supervisors.
- Preferred (not required): Advanced knowledge of the railroad industry through vocational education, apprenticeship, on-the-job training, or similar work experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to listen, learn, take direction, adapt, and work independently or in a team.
- Must pass a drug test and a 7-year background check.
- Outdoor conditions, including rain, snow, ice, cold, heat, wind, dust, and fumes.
- Required travel throughout the yard verifying unit numbers.
- Frequent noise.
- Ability to work in a potentially hazardous environment with fast-moving equipment.
