Under general supervision, perform a variety of activities with the students in addition to the current Playworks Program; supervise pupils in cafeterias, playgrounds and other areas assigned by the principal; perform related work as required.

DEFINITION

Under direct supervision of general and special education teachers, assist with the instruction of students receiving special education services. Perform various duties as specified in the Individual Educational Plans.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this classification may be found in general education classrooms and in Resource Specialist programs and SDC classes and are designed to enhance the development of children in special education programs under the teacher’s direction.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Assist instructional personnel in the education, instruction and supervision of students with special needs.

2. Assist a certificated teacher by providing individual assistance to students in pre-academic/academic areas: work with small groups of students on IEP goals as outlined in student IEP.

3. Assist in the development and presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises.

4. Prepare and assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to students with special needs.

5. Assist students in basic care activities including dressing, toileting, feeding and grooming; may change diapers.

6. Assist students with activities for the development of small muscles and eye-hand coordination deficiencies; lead activities designed to help students improve motor control, and sensory regulation.

7. May provide basic first aid and physical care as directed by district or related services personnel.

8. May assist with the maintenance and adjustment of equipment such as standers, walkers, wheelchair and braces; correctly place and remove braces on students; push students in wheelchairs.

9. Observe behavior of students to assure safety; facilitate play and social interactions; assist in resolving student disputes; assist in the development and management of appropriate student behavior using positive reinforcement techniques.

10. Maintain routine records related to student work and classroom activities; grade tests and check student test corrections; maintain confidentiality of student records and information according to established policies and guidelines.

11. Assists in performing clerical tasks such as typing, duplicating, filing and taking attendance; distribute and account for an inventory of textbooks, supplies and equipment.

12. Attend staff meetings and in-service programs as required.

13. Assists students by modeling appropriate behavior, social skills and attitudes and providing emotional support and general guidance.

14. Helps maintain classroom in a clean and orderly condition during the school day including checking and storing equipment, games and supplies, reports missing or damaged games and devices to the teacher. May repair damaged materials or make replacement parts.

15. May accompany students to other classrooms, field trips or therapy settings as assigned; provide individual instructional assistance.

16. Perform other related duties as assigned.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • General needs and behavior of children with disabilities
  • Basic first aid principles
  • Basic subjects taught in schools including arithmetic, reading, and writing
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
  • Basic record-keeping techniques

Ability to:

  • Work effectively with children, earning their confidence and trust
  • Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment
  • Learn procedures and activities necessary to operate and maintain specialized equipment which will assist students
  • Learn and apply basic first aid techniques and practices
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with children and adults
  • Operate standard office machines and equipment
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Speak, read and understand the English language sufficiently to successfully receive/provide information to/from students, the public, co-workers, supervisors, etc.

  • Operate basic office equipment (i.e., telephone, copier, calculator, etc.) to perform routine clerical work
  • Perform all duties listed on the job description

EXPERIENCE

One year of volunteer and/or paid experience working with children and/or the handicapped in an organized setting. Child development training is desirable.

EDUCATION

Graduation from high school or equivalency, preferably supplemented by courses in psychology, child growth and development, or a closely related field.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Some positions may require a valid California driver’s license. Possession of a valid CPR and/or First Aid Certificate is required and must be obtained during the probationary period.
