Medical Director (Part-Time, On-Call)Position Overview
Compass Rescue is seeking a licensed physician to serve as a part-time, on-call Medical Director for our BLS-level rescue service. This position involves providing medical oversight, quality assurance, and clinical guidance to ensure the highest standards of pre-hospital care. The role is designed to accommodate a practicing physician's schedule with minimal time commitment while maintaining essential medical supervision of our operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, review, and approve BLS-level medical protocols and standing orders
- Conduct quarterly review of patient care reports and treatment outcomes
- Provide medical consultation for complex cases or unusual situations as needed
- Participate in annual skills verification and competency assessments
- Advise on equipment and supply selection to ensure medical appropriateness
- Assist in development of continuing education programs for staff
- Be available for occasional phone consultation during complex rescue operations
- Participate in quarterly quality improvement meetings (in-person or virtual)
- Review and sign off on new hire medical qualifications
- Serve as liaison with local healthcare facilities when necessary
Qualifications Required
- MD or DO with current state medical license in good standing
- Board certification in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, or related specialty
- Current ACLS certification
- Knowledge of pre-hospital emergency care standards and protocols
- Familiarity with BLS scope of practice and limitations
- Excellent communication skills and ability to explain medical concepts clearly
- Professional liability insurance that covers medical direction activities
Preferred
- Previous experience as an EMS Medical Director
- Experience with technical rescue or wilderness medicine
- Completion of a Medical Director Course
- Background in emergency medicine or critical care
- Experience in quality improvement processes
- Prior experience as an EMT, Paramedic, or other pre-hospital provider
Time Commitment
This position requires approximately 5-10 hours per month, including:
- Quarterly in-person or virtual meetings (2 hours each)
- Monthly review of cases and documentation (1-2 hours)
- On-call phone availability for unusual circumstances
- Annual protocol review and update (4-8 hours total, can be divided)
