What are the responsibilities and job description for the Full-Time Microbiology Laboratory Technician position at Packaging Consultants International?
Education/Experience: Associate degree in science related field required. No special experience required, but preference given for those with 2 years laboratory experience, preferably in microbiology lab.
Training: No special training needed, provided “on the job” for specific test methods. Ongoing training requirements and opportunities dependent on performance and availability of appropriate training courses.
Technical Knowledge Summary: Understanding of microbiological testing and aseptic technique. Understanding of proper use of laboratory equipment to perform tests. Provides all phases of laboratory testing services and supports business in all areas by performing the following essential duties.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned): Perform microbiological testing using current laboratory procedures and standards as outlined in the 17th Edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Dairy Products, the 23rd Edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, and FDA BAM (online).
Perform tests including, but not limited to swab test, rinse test, pour contact and disintegration tests.
Authorized for analysis of results, including opinions and interpretations (ex. “NES”), and must initiate sample retesting and customer notification process as applicable if interpretation exceeds regulatory and/or customer standards.
Daily preparation of all media used to include but not limited to Standard Methods Agar, Violet Red Bile Agar, Potato Dextrose Agar, and Nutrient Broth.
Replenish supplies and materials daily and order as needed.
Inspect supplies upon receipt for conformance to requirements.
Ensure storage room and laboratory are always neat and orderly.
Keep daily records of pH and temperatures of equipment including but not limited to incubators, refrigerators, water bath, hot air oven and autoclave.
Perform weekly and quarterly sterility checks on the autoclaves and hot air oven.
Perform monthly calibration checks on scale/balance(s). Ensure annual calibrations are completed by ISO 17025 accredited service provider.
Quarterly media weight loss studies on certified incubators.
Check and calibrate thermometers annually and as needed to maintain Interstate Milk Shippers (IMS) & New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM) requirements. Ensure traceable thermometer calibrations are performed annually by ISO 17025 accredited service provider.
Perform necessary chemical tests on distilled water monthly. Verify certificate of analysis conductivity with each new lot.
Keep IMS/NYSDAM certification current by performing annual milk and water splits.
Prepare and conduct NYSDAM laboratory inspections.
Perform required Proficiency Testing to maintain test methods on ISO 17025 scope of accreditation.
Read daily micro plates for bacteria, mold & yeast, etc. with colony counter.
Keep laboratory neat and tidy by following established cleaning procedures at required frequencies.
Fix and clean blenders as needed.
Log in samples for testing, if needed.
Train and supervise new (in-training) Laboratory Technicians as required in these listed duties and responsibilities.
File/manage technical documents as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Certificates and Licenses: New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets licensure in all required test methods (ex. rinse, swab, pour contact, disintegration, and coliform tests) for laboratory to maintain current IMS Laboratory listing.
Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to understand when additional technical information is needed to accomplish a task and identify the proper resource to obtain that information.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of internet software, database software, spreadsheet software (MS Excel), and word processing software (MS Word).
Equipment: Ability to operate autoclave, hot air oven, pH meter, water baths, balances, incubators, glassware, hot plate/stirrers (magnetic), pipets, and pipettors.
