POSITION OVERVIEW: Under the direction of the General Manager, the Group Fitness Manager oversees all aspects of the group fitness department. This role involves designing and maintaining high-quality programming, strategic planning, staff management, and aligning operations with organizational goals. The Group Fitness Manager ensures exceptional member experiences, promotes a culture of wellness, and aims for group fitness to account for at least 30% of total monthly visits. Responsibilities include recruiting and developing a high performing team, optimizing class schedules, and ensuring classes meet national fitness standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES:
General Duties
· Design, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive group fitness program that aligns with member needs and organizational goals.
· Structure class schedules for maximum participation while adhering to budget guidelines.
· Ensure that all fitness classes meet national fitness standards and that instructors provide exceptional service.
· Maintain and enhance the studio environment, including lighting, sound systems, flooring, and stage, to create an optimal experience for each class.
· Actively participate as a group fitness instructor, teaching classes as needed and evaluating the effectiveness of programming.
· Other duties as assigned by the General Manager.
Staff Management
· Recruit, interview, audition, and select qualified fitness instructors to create an “artistry level” group fitness instructor team.
· Provide ongoing training, development, and evaluation for all group fitness instructors to ensure high-quality performance and adherence to best practices.
· Monitor staff performance, providing regular feedback through both formal and informal evaluations.
· Ensure that all instructors meet certification and continuing education requirements.
Marketing and Member Engagement
· Utilize internal and external marketing strategies to attract and retain loyal group fitness members.
· Maintain effective communication with members through various marketing avenues, including announcements, newsletters, and social media.
· Actively promote the Performance and Wellness Department and its programs through special events, workshops, and presentations.
Operations
· Oversee daily operations in the group fitness department, ensuring compliance with organizational standards in staffing, equipment, facility operations, and safety.
· Supervise exercise and fitness areas to ensure they are well-maintained and adequately equipped.
· Partner with the General Manager to maintain an effective member feedback and communication system.
Other Responsibilities
· Attend meetings, seminars, and functions as required.
· Take initiative to solve problems and continuously improve the member experience.
· Understand and support the mission of the organization, acting as a visible and active member of the management team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree preferred; relevant experience and certifications will be considered.
· Minimum of 2 years as a Group Fitness Instructor with leadership experience in group fitness classes, strength training, and fitness assessments.
· Must hold and maintain professional certification through a nationally recognized organization (e.g., NASM, ACE, AFAA).
· Must have and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications.
· Experience in program implementation and management.
· Results-oriented professional with a positive outlook and a commitment to quality.
· Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to critically assess performance.
· Comfortable dealing with company owners, product managers, and other stakeholders.
· Reliable, tolerant, and determined, with a desire to build a high-performing team.
· Flexibility to work during peak club hours, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.
· Broad knowledge of the fitness industry, including personal training, group exercise, and fitness programming.
· Ability to teach group fitness classes competently.
· Excellent interpersonal, public relations, and communication skills.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic mathematical calculations related to group fitness participation.
· Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and develop staff.
· Ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
· Capable of teaching group fitness classes and lifting up to 55 pounds using proper techniques.
