Nursing Department Management
The Director of Nursing is responsible for overseeing the entire nursing department, including staffing levels. They develop and implement nursing policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
The position involves ensuring resident safety and dignity, as well as developing and conducting in-services for clinical staff. The Director is also responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training nursing staff.
They coordinate pharmacy services, manage medication destruction, and serve as a liaison between the facility, physicians, and family members. In addition, the Director may be required to testify in court proceedings.
The Director works closely with other departments to provide excellent overall resident care. This includes managing department budgets and reporting, staying up-to-date on regulatory changes, and disseminating this information appropriately.
Key responsibilities include participating in QA, Utilization Review, and Patient Care conferences. The Director also assists with state surveys and required follow-up activities.
Care planning and coordination, including MDS, are essential aspects of the role. Employee appraisals, disciplinary actions, and terminations are also within the Director's purview.
Supervisory Requirements
The Director of Nursing supervises and manages the ADON and entire nursing staff, either directly or indirectly.
Qualifications
A minimum of 7 years of nurse management experience is preferred. Graduation from an Accredited School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) is also desirable.
Language Skills
The ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations is essential.
Mathematical Skills
Familiarity with concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions is necessary for problem-solving.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite products and Point Click Care (PCC) is required.
Physical Demands
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and frequently use office equipment, including copiers, scanners, faxes, telephones, and calculators.
