Job Summary :
The Director of Nursing (DON) will oversee all aspects of nursing services within the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF). This individual is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to residents, managing nursing staff, and complying with all regulatory standards and facility policies. The DON will work closely with other healthcare professionals and leadership teams to create a positive, patient-centered environment, while fostering a culture of compassion, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities :
- Leadership & Staff Management
- Lead, direct, and mentor the nursing team, including RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and other nursing support staff.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained at all times to meet patient needs.
- Oversee hiring, onboarding, training, and performance evaluations of nursing staff.
- Provide coaching, education, and performance improvement opportunities for nursing staff to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Quality of Care
- Develop and implement nursing care plans in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, ensuring that care meets residents' physical, emotional, and social needs.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements (state, federal, and accreditation bodies), including maintaining accurate medical records and adhering to infection control practices.
- Monitor and evaluate the quality of care provided and work to continuously improve outcomes through evidence-based practices and data analysis.
- Address and resolve resident / family concerns in a timely, compassionate, and professional manner.
- Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure the nursing department maintains compliance with all state and federal regulations, including but not limited to HIPAA, OSHA, and the Department of Health.
- Conduct regular audits of nursing documentation and medication management.
- Oversee preparation for and participation in regulatory surveys and inspections, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Clinical and Financial Oversight
- Collaborate with the facility's administrative team to ensure effective budgeting and resource allocation for nursing services.
- Assist in managing the nursing department's budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and control of operational costs.
- Develop strategies for reducing hospital readmission rates, improving patient outcomes, and managing chronic conditions within the nursing population.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Foster a collaborative and supportive working relationship with physicians, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and department heads.
- Serve as a key member of the leadership team, contributing to the overall strategic direction and goals of the facility.
- Maintain open lines of communication with families and residents, providing updates on care plans, progress, and any changes in condition.
- Professional Development & Education
- Stay current on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes by attending conferences, webinars, and continuing education courses.
- Promote a culture of ongoing learning and professional development for all nursing staff. Qualifications :
- Education :
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a current, valid license in the state of Oregon.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
- Experience :
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical nursing experience, preferred experience in a leadership role.
- Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, including CMS, state licensing, and survey processes.
- Proven ability to manage and motivate nursing staff, with experience in performance management and employee development.
- Skills :
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make data-driven decisions and manage multiple priorities.
- Comprehensive knowledge of nursing practices, medical terminology, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and other healthcare-related software.
- Certifications :
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Additional certifications in geriatric nursing, nursing management, or related areas preferred.
