Job Summary

Paideia is an independent, progressive pre-K through 12 college-preparatory school in the Emory University area of Atlanta. The Junior High enrolls approximately 190 students. The program includes six self-contained homebase classrooms as well as specialist teachers. There are two teachers in each of the six classrooms with a mix of approximately 32 students from the 7th and 8th grades. Students break out into specialist classes for Math, Science, Music, Art, and PE. Art is a fundamental part of the Junior High experience.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

7th and 8th grade art students begin with drawing and painting including: color theory, still life, figure drawing, and working with various mediums - oil, watercolor and acrylic paints. Students also have the chance to explore foundations in printmaking , mixed media, and clay projects, as well as other 3D mediums. The junior high art curriculum is the stage where students are introduced to the technical foundations of art, the creative process and creating finished works. This position would also include leading the JH art club and involvement in all aspects of the junior high community - chaperoning school trips, dances, researching and collaborating with different school levels on visiting artists, and collaborating with other faculty in the junior high.

7th grade students take art one day a week year-round and 8th grade students take art two days a week year-round. Average class size is 15 students

Experience working with both 2D and 3D mediums is preferred with the flexibility to teach both. Other requirements include; weekly faculty meetings, carpool and lunch duty, chaperoning social events, and participating as a full member of the school community. Faculty members create courses for a 2 week long short term at the end of the school year. Some faculty members choose to sponsor an activity or coach one of the many school sports teams. This position would also require faculty collaboration and coordination of curriculum with both elementary and high school programs.

Important personal qualities include a love of learning, interest in and demonstrated ability to teach and support adolescents, an engaging teaching style, flexibility, organizational skill, energy, collegiality, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has a strong art background, practices with a variety of instruction methods, and a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience. While a college degree in a related field is required, a master’s is preferred.

Paideia is a K-12 college preparatory school of 999 students in the Emory University area of Atlanta; the elementary school enrolls 333 students. The elementary program includes twelve full-day, self-contained classrooms grades K-6. There are two teachers in each class of twenty-six to twenty-eight children.
