ATHLETIC COACH
JOB DESCRIPTION
QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Valid Florida Educator’s Certificate with Athletic Coaching Endorsement
2) Knowledge and experience in assigned sport with evidence of a successful high school or college coaching
background
3) Hold training certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
4) Satisfactory criminal background check
5) Valid Florida Driver’s License and acceptable driving record
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1) Ability to read and interpret documents such as policies and procedure manuals. Follow directions and
apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
2) Must possess leadership and communication skills
3) Ability to work after school hours during assigned sports season
4) Ability to teach relevant skills, tactics and techniques
5) Be prepared to work in bad weather and be willing to travel with the team to different locations for games
6) Knowledge of sport specific equipment and maintenance thereof
7) Willingness to work with others and respond constructively to feed back; work collaboratively with
colleagues
8) Ability to instruct and work with student athletes to prepare them for competitions
9) Ability to enforce 100% engagement in assigned sport at all times and utilize behavior management
strategies to set and maintain clear expectations
10) Extensive knowledge of rules, strategies, and techniques of assigned sport
11) Knowledge of sports equipment, physical fitness, and safety
12) Ability to adjust tasks and schedule to changed priorities

JOB GOAL
Part time position. Instruct or coach groups or individuals in the fundamentals of sports.
Demonstrate techniques and methods of participation work to improve the athlete’s
techniques to prepare them for competition.
SUPERVISES:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
(1) Serve as a role model for students, dressing and grooming professionally, demonstrating the importance
and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the honorable profession of
teaching.
(2) Create a sportsmanlike environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interest,
and abilities of students.
(3) Set an example, inspire players and work with them on improvement.
(4) Coach shall take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco use and should avoid the use
of these when in contact with players.
(5) Coach shall promote the entire interscholastic program of the school and direct his or her program in
harmony with the total school program.
(6) Coach shall master the contest rules and shall teach them to his or her team members. The coach shall not
seek an advantage by circumvention of the spirit or letter of the rules.
(7) Coach shall exert his or her influence to enhance sportsmanship by spectators; both directly and by working
closely with cheerleaders, pep club sponsors, booster clubs, athletic director and administrators.
(8) Coach shall respect and support contest officials. The coach shall not indulge in conduct that would incite
players or spectators against the officials. Public criticism of officials or players is unethical.
(9) Establish high standards and expectations for all students to accept responsibility for behavior.
(10) Supervise students and consistently administer rules regarding student behavior.
(11) Assist students in learning to accept responsibility, demonstrate respect for people and property, and
demonstrate self-discipline.
(12) Establish a professional rapport with students that earns their respect.
(13) Provide individual and small-group instruction to students with varying intellectual, athletic, and artistic
abilities, and to accommodate a variety of athletic activities.
(14) Responsible for some administrative tasks, including scheduling of athletic contests or games; each coach
is solely responsible for the eligibility of their team members.
(15) Hold tryouts for assigned sport, observing skills and practices of student athletes, assign positions.
(16) All coaches will share in the responsibility of taking admission at gates and operating the clock at events
for which they are scheduled. A gate schedule will be given to each coach prior to the beginning of each sport
season. You will not be assigned to cover a gate during your sport season.
(17) Maintain and/or organize sport specific booster club.
(18) Willingness to share prospective athletes with other sports of different seasons.
(19) Maintain playing field and/or facilities.
(20) Provide off-season strength training program for student athletes.
(21) Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure
the over-all safety of pupils.
(22) Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.
(23) Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration,
instructional staff, students, parents, and representatives of resource agencies within the community.
(24) Attend required coaching staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on committees.
(25) Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use
discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
(26) Maintain professional competence through education activities or in self-selected professional growth
activities.
(27) Perform any other tasks as assigned by Principal(s) or Athletic Director.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force as frequently
and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects. Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate
physical effort in medium work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and
crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of
moderate weight.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan.
Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District. Position is
temporary/part time. Supplementary Salary Schedule

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the PCSD Board’s policy on
evaluation of personnel.
