Job Description
PaleoWest/CHG is seeking a professionally qualified and experienced architectural historian for a full-time position in the Midwest. This position will involve providing technical expertise and leadership to guide a variety of projects through the environmental and historic preservation compliance processes for our clients in the private and public sectors. The successful candidate will serve as key staff at the regional level in the Upper Midwest and as part of our growing national historic resources program. This position will also include project management.
Hire Type: Full-time (salary)
Schedule: 40 hours, Monday–Friday, normal business hours
Location: Midwest
Job Duties:
- Working with our team of cultural resource professionals to undertake historic resource surveys and other investigative work related to the identification, evaluation, and assessment of effects to historic properties
- Preparing technical reports and associated documentation
- Assisting with the development of proposals and cost estimates
- Maintaining regular communication with clients to keep them informed of project progress, project schedule review, and ensuring all project needs are being addressed in a timely manner and within budget
- Helping to coordinate project review with state and federal agencies, including various State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs)
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in historic preservation or a closely related field, such as history, architectural history, or public history
- 3 years of experience conducting historical research, completing historical resource surveys, and evaluating the historic and architectural significance of properties under National Register of Historic Places criteria
- Good understanding of state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
- Experience with developing technical and cost proposals
- Ability to travel throughout Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest to conduct research and field survey
Preferred Skills
- Preference given to candidates with knowledge of historical Midwestern architectural forms, styles, and trends, and the various historical property types and characteristic of the region
- Demonstrable research, technical writing, and communication skills
- The ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- Project management experience a plus
- GIS experience a plus
- Experience in Wisconsin and other Midwestern states desired
