Job Description for PM&L Theatre: Managing Director
The Managing Director is responsible for management and leadership tasks of the PM&L Theatre under the guidance of the Board of Directors. This individual is responsible for meeting the objectives of the organization’s mission and the strategic plan. The Managing Director must be an excellent communicator and be able to manage a staff of creative individuals. The Managing Director needs to be able to coordinate a professional community of diverse constituents with diverse ideas and to mediate conflicting ideas. The
Managing Director must be able to assist with fundraising as well as be an advocate and spokesperson for the theatre.
Key Responsibilities:
● Overall business management of PM&L Theatre’s productions and the coordination of activities pertaining to a community theatre. (i.e. selecting and scheduling outside vendors, coordinating with committees, overseeing paid staff, coordinating contracts with outside groups)
● Setting best practices for patron relations.
● Coordinate the choosing and direction of all Main Stage, Youth Theatre, and Tribute Hall productions each year.
● Responsible for overseeing publicity and marketing activities which include digital, media communications, press releases, brochure and playbill design and composition
● Coordinate volunteer growth and activities within the theatre, including recruitment, training, engagement, and direction of volunteers.
● Accountable for financial recording keeping: accounts receivable and payable, employee payroll
● Provide accurate budgeting reports to the Board of Directors on a monthly basis.
● Attending, staffing, and reporting to all Board meetings.
● Research and development of grant funding for community theatre activities.
Qualifications:
● Computer literate, and proficient in use of GoogleDocs and Microsoft Office Suite
● Strong verbal and written communication skills
● Understanding of the various digital marketing platforms and strategies for decisions related to marketing.
● Proven organizational and time management skills.
Education/Experience:
● Bachelor's degree in Arts Administration, Business Management, NonProfit Administration, or a related field; or equivalent work experience
● 5 years plus working with non-profit leadership position in the performing arts with experience in fundraising or marketing and board relations;
● Experience managing paid staff and volunteers
● Experience setting and managing budgets
● Knowledge in various technical stage equipment, use, and general stagecraft (i.e. set needs, light & sound components, blocking, safety) as well as components of production for straight plays, musicals, and improv
Work Conditions/Physical Requirements:
● Evenings and weekend hours, weekday hours as needed
● Flexible schedule with some weeks heavy hours and others lighter hours
● Able to move through most areas of the theatre with reasonable accommodations
● Be able to lift up to 30 lbs for things such as program print boxes or stage flats
● Awareness and use of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility guidelines
