Technical Security Specialist
SUMMARY:
In support of the university’s mission and objectives, the Technical Security Specialist is responsible for maintaining, administering, and advancing the university’s access control and electronic and mechanical security systems. The role requires technical expertise, strategic planning, and hands-on troubleshooting to ensure the integrity and functionality of mechanical and electronic locking systems, card reader operations, electronic surveillance systems, and other essential security measures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Administers and oversees the operational aspects of all mechanical and electronic locking systems, ensuring systems are maintained for optimal functionality.
- Troubleshoots and repairs equipment malfunctions by identifying root causes, resolving issues efficiently, and coordinating with vendors when required.
- Monitors notifications and service requests for card reader systems, troubleshooting and resolving issues by applying technical expertise and engaging vendor support when necessary.
- Assesses campus security needs and analyzes vulnerabilities to propose cost-effective corrective strategies.
- Collaborates to design and implement an integrated access control system that aligns with institutional goals
- Assists with operational tasks such as front desk responsibilities and provides essential support during personnel absences to ensure continuity.
- Anticipates urgent security needs and provides on-call support on a rotational schedule to address critical issues promptly.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Post high school training required; Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent experience
- Experience in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electronic access control and IP surveillance cameras
- Courses in basic networking
- A valid Florida Driver’s License is required and must be maintained throughout employment, required.
- Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL) or Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL), preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience.
- Basic understanding of network protocols and processes; advanced knowledge of the Windows operating system; proficient in using basic hand tools, power tools, and other diagnostic tools; CompTIA or equivalent experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) to perform tasks such as reading system interfaces, identifying small components, and working with intricate locking mechanisms or hardware.
- Ability to distinguish colors to interpret wiring diagrams, system status indicators, and identify color-coded components or cables.
- Ability to work non-routine hours as needed throughout the year.
- Ability to traverse campus and stairs.
- Ability to lift/move objects up to 50 Pounds.
- Ability to perform extensive standing, walking, and running.
- Ability to operate equipment, AED, fire extinguishers, golf carts, and other related equipment as required
- Ability to climb ladders safely without any fear of heights.
- Capacity to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or wind.
