What are the responsibilities and job description for the Child Nutrition Assistant III position at Palmdale School District?
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform duties at various sites during the day that need assistance. Drive a District or personal vehicle to pick up and deliver food, equipment and supplies at various sites as needed; loads and unloads vehicles with food, equipment and supplies for transport to other sites.
- Prepare and bake rolls, breads, cookies, and other pastries following menus and recipes; measure, weigh, and mix necessary ingredients in accordance with menu and recipe.
- Assist in the preparation of all meal components.
- Assist in setting up of serving areas; serve food to students and faculty members.
- Clean and store utensils, cafeteria equipment, and food supplies; clean work and serving areas.
- Operate kitchen cooking and cleaning machinery including oven, mixer, grater, slicer, and dishwasher.
- Perform general cleaning duties to ensure kitchens and equipment are clean and sanitary; washes, dries and puts away equipment, utensils and appliances; cleans and sanitizes work areas and equipment; sweeps and mops the kitchen and serving area; cleans tables.
- Estimate quantities of foods and supplies required; assist in requisitioning, receiving and storing foods and supplies. Assist in taking inventory of food and supplies.
- Record the quantity of food used for each meal; counts and stocks the supplies; counts leftover food and beverages and stores appropriately; fills and wraps food containers; records and stores delivered goods.
- Prepare serving carts and other equipment for sale at specific sites outside of the nutrition center; takes out and sells from food and mobile carts; transports food on campus; returns food and equipment to the kitchen; may assist with preparing meals and packed lunches for school programs.
- Serve students and staff at service lines and mobile carts; performs cashiering duties, including collecting money, making change and monitoring meal accountability at point-of-sale by ensuring students receive the USDA required meal components and portions, and that students are served one reimbursable breakfast and/or lunch.
- Monitor and keep record of food temperatures, quantity of food used and serving portions.
- Prepare and deliver bank deposits.
- Assist in the coordination and training of lower level staff.
- Serve as Child Nutrition Manager as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Education:
Two years of food service experience, preferably in an institutional setting.
Training:
Formal or informal training or education which ensures the ability to read and write at a level for successful job performance. Specialized training in food preparation, sanitation, or a related field is desirable.
- Appropriate Food Handler / ServSafe Certificate
- Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
- Ability to be covered under the District property/liability insurance.
Examination
The examination components may consist of a qualifying written multiple-choice, performance, and oral exam. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be required to take the exam and notified via email communication of the scheduled date, time, and location. A valid picture identification is required prior to admittance.
Tentative exam dates: Week of April 1, 2025.
After the exam procedure concludes for this recruitment, an eligibility list will be established to fill future vacancies. When eligibility lists include open and promotional lists of qualified persons through competitive examination, the promotional list will be used first, unless otherwise stated on this bulletin.
Work Schedule:
This position typically works five hours and 45 minutes (5.75) per day and observes the student calendar. The schedule may require employees to work an afternoon/evening shift.
Compensation
The initial hiring rate is for a new employee is at the first step of the appropriate five-step salary schedule for the position. The probationary period is 130-work days in paid status. Upon completing the probationary period for permanent status, a one-step salary advance will be granted and shall establish an anniversary date upon which all future advances on the salary range shall be based.
Holidays and Leaves
Seventeen (17) paid holidays that fall within the work year, pursuant to the District's Collective Bargaining Agreement with California Schools Employees Association Chapter 296 (CSEA).
Sick leave shall be granted in the proportion of daily hours worked. Vacation is earned at the prescribed rate as part of compensation, and does not become vested until after completion of the initial probationary period.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
This job is primarily performed indoors in a school kitchen. Exposure to temperature extremes (i.e. ovens, refrigerator/freezer), food odors, cleaners/disinfectants. 40 lb. lifting/carrying weight requirement; some pushing and/or pulling, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, twisting at waist; frequent standing and walking; exposure to noise of kitchen equipment, students and staff; vision and hearing in normal range with or without accommodation.
