Under the general supervision of a certificated administrator and direction of a teacher, uses total communication e.g. sign language to instruct pupils individually or in groups in accordance with prescribed learning objectives, and act as a paraprofessional assistant to a teacher in performing assigned tasks.
  1. Use total communication skills (e.g. sign language) continuously while performing tasks;
  2. Under direction of a teacher, provide individualized instruction by matching instruction to the needs of  each pupil; work with the pupils individually or in small groups to tutor, reinforce or follow up on learning activities;
  3. Translate oral or written English into total communication skills (e.g. sign language); help pupils relate to individual and groups in the mainstream environment; help pupil learn to be aware of their personal appearance and how to take care of personal needs; help pupils to be self-reliant;
  4. Assist teachers in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe and pleasant classroom and learning  environment;
  5. Assist teacher in implementing the division course of study through individual and group instruction;
  6. Confer on a regular basis with teacher in regard to activities, instructional goal and objectives, student progress and pertinent health or behavior problems;
  7. May participate as a member to help develop and implement individual or site crisis management plans;
  8. Assist teachers with the modification and maintenance of appropriate standards of behavior for pupils; assist teachers with implementation of pupil's Individualized Education Program (IEP);
  9. Under the direction of the school administrator and the procedure observed by certified school staff member, assist pupils with taking medication; may administer first aide;
  10. Assist with supervision of classroom, outdoor playground and field trip activities to direct pupils into safe activities and relationships;
  11. Assist pupils in learning oral speech patterns by helping them produce sounds, words and sentences; assist teachers with classroom activities for pupils;
  12. Attend inservice and staff meetings as required;
  13. Perform routine clerical tasks; operate computer technology and office equipment for classroom  related assignments;
  14. Maintain confidentiality of pupils records in accordance with legal requirements and policies;
  15.  Perform related duties as assigned.

Experience:
Three months of paid experience working with people who can communicate or be communicated with only through sign language. Any other combination of training and/or experience which demonstrates the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered.
AND
Education:
Graduation from high school or GED. One specialized course in sign language may be substituted for three months of paid experience working with people who can communicate or be communicated with only through sign language.
 
This position requires applicants to meet the academic proficiency requirements in ONE of the following ways:
  • -Completed two years or more of college units (48 units); OR
  • -Received an AA degree or higher; OR
  • -Successfully complete our academic proficiency exam which requires knowledge of reading, writing and mathematics.

If you are attempting to satisfy the academic proficiency requirement,  official college transcripts must be attached to the application to validate the degree awarded or completion of 48 college units.  If official transcripts are not attached to the application, you will be required to take and pass the academic proficiency assessment in addition to the job-specific examination for this position.

Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing

Work Schedule:
This position works seven (7) hours/day, and observes the student calendar.    

Examination
The examination may consist of a qualifying multiple-choice examination, skills performance examination or equivalent, and structured oral interview.

After the exam procedure concludes for this recruitment, an eligibility list will be established to fill future vacancies.  When eligibility lists include open and promotional lists of qualified persons through competitive examination, the promotional list will be used first, unless otherwise stated on this bulletin.

Salary and Benefits 
The salary rate for a new employee is at the first step of the appropriate salary schedule for the position.  The District provides and contributes to a comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision, term life insurance) per contract year for each employee and eligible dependents.  View the benefit matrix.
 
Holidays and Leaves
Seventeen (17) paid holidays that fall within the work year, pursuant to the District's Collective Bargaining Agreement with California Schools Employees Association Chapter 296 (CSEA).  
 
Sick leave shall be granted in the proportion of daily hours worked.  Vacation is earned at the prescribed rate as part of compensation, and does not become vested until after completion of the initial probationary period.

Working Conditions:
Indoor classroom environment, outdoor environment when assisting with outdoor activities.  Exposure to temperature swings in climate-controlled or outdoor environments; potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids from students; exposure to various noises form classrooms, office equipment/machines, students and employees.

Physical Demands

Dexterity of hands and fingers for total communication (e.g. sign language) and to operate standard office and classroom equipment; sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time; some bending at the waist, kneeling and crouching to assist students. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities; hearing and speaking to exchange information
