What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director, Prison Education Program position at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University?
The Assistant Director will assist the Prison Education Program Director with program operations, including the development and maintenance of systems related to admissions, marketing, event-planning, academic programing, co-curricular activities, and the management of student information. This person will have direct interactions with incarcerated individuals. A high level of personal maturity, including strong emotional intelligence, accountability, professionalism, and the ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion are a must.
- Work with the Program Director, and Eastern University’s Office of Admissions and Financial Aid to organize, track, and assess application materials.
- Assist in the on-boarding and training of faculty and volunteers.
- Escorting inside facility, maintaining pa.gov email, printing for faculty, advising students/addressing student concerns, giving grade updates for students, requesting call-outs
- Assist Program Director in managing and tracking operational budget, such as the submission of check requests and credit card reconciliation forms.
- Effectively communicate with stakeholders and volunteers by(a) typing emails and meeting minutes, (b)processing and editing documents,(c)creating tables and representing financial data, (d) maintaining PEP’s social media presence, and (e) assisting with the creation and dissemination of regular PEP newsletters
- Assist in arranging and scheduling PEP events.
- Work with Program Director to monitor and order instructional supplies.
- Propose co-curricular activities and events to enhance the college experience for PEP students.
- Assist with logistics related to reentry programming, non-credit courses, and special events.
- Organize and maintain files in a confidential manner.
- Be in compliance with allEastern University and PA Department of Corrections policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required; master's degree preferred
- 2-3 years of experience serving in a Prison Education Program.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system and reform issues
- Experience working as a staff or faculty member in a higher education institution
- Ability to obtain and retain security clearance at correctional facility.
- Experience managing multiple kinds of data.
- Experience refining and developing processes and systems.
- Capacity to appropriately manage emotions and navigate challenging conversations and situations.
- Proficiency in MS Office suite and use of Google Drive
- Experience handling confidential information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to navigate and effectively liaise with university staff and faculty, and PA Department of Corrections employees.
- Must embody the values of caring and compassion, justice and integrity, competence and affirmation.
- Must strive to treat each member of the campus community—especially PEP students—with fairness, dignity, and respect.
